Task
Introduction
This assignment enables you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of computer networks. You are required to produce a document. You are advised to start work on the assignment at an early stage during the unit.
Some aspects of this assignment will require you to research real components that are currently available in the marketplace. Furthermore, you will also be asked to make judgements about what is best for a particular scenario. Please note that there is not always one right answer. However, you will need to justify your reasons for any choices you make to get high marks.
You are NOT required to design a complete network. You are required to detail the specifics covered by the task list shown below.
Scenario:
COVID-19 has forced companies globally to redesign their office space and networking infrastructure to support a safe shared office space and enable effective and reliable remote connections to allow working from home for employees.Enterprise level organisations have been well equipped to rise to the challenge with current infrastructure supporting the reactive requirements to a pandemic lockdown. SME’s (small and medium sized organisations that employ ONE (1) – FIVE-HUNDRED (500) employees)have been left to adopt and adapt technology solutions to enable the workforce to remain active and productive. The results have been varied with some organisations struggling to change, some creating larger attack surfaces for malicious actors to take advantage of, and others simply have not reacted due to a lack of knowledge on how to move forward. A key trend from the pandemic has led organisations to become more aware of implementing solutions to allow effective remote working (WFH-Working from Home). The issue with remote work has been allowing secure access to local resources without compromising the network or requiring lots of investment.Another consideration with organisations is the physical space. While many will occupy a single space it is not uncommon for an organisation to have other sites or offices meaning that network based resources might have to be decentralised where possible and accessible to all.You have been commissioned by a local council to produce information to be distributed to local employers to help them update their knowledge to promote growth and to secure jobs for local residents.The local businesses are varied therefore you must select a specific sector to focus your information towards such as retail, manufacturing, hospitality, health, education.The council is looking to award small business grants to help local businesses introduce or develop their use of technology for ecommerce, mobile payment solutions, VOIP, VPN,wireless networking capability, adoption of 5G.
Aim:
To demonstrate your understanding of computer networking in the real world. You are required to produce a report, broken down into the following SIX (6) tasks:
Task 1 – Business Communication.
Identify and briefly discuss your choice of business sector (e.g. retail, manufacturing,hospitality, health, education). Based on your selection of business sector discuss their general network requirements e.g. expected network hardware setup, what OS they are
likely to have on devices. Identify FOUR (4) real world uses of how they may use technology to communicate within their business. In your answer you need to explain which protocol would likely be used and the layer of the OSI model it would operate at with an explanation of each unique OSI layer identified.
a) Identify a business of your choice and briefly discuss your choice.
b) Discuss the network requirements of your chosen business.
c) Identify FOUR (4) real world uses of how they may use technology to communicate within their business.
i) For each of the FOUR (4) real world communications you provide you need to also explain which protocol is likely used.
ii) For each protocol you must identify the OSI layer this protocol operates within and provide an explanation for each unique OSI layer identified.
Task 2 – Planning a Network.
Explain the term logical topology. Identify, illustrate and justify the most suitable logical network topology for your selected business. Make clear where wireless technologies can be used with an explanation of TWO (2) wireless standards that would allow fast and reliable networking capability.

Task 3 – Secure the Network.
Describe TWO (2) types of firewall and explain THREE (3) common network threats identifying an effective countermeasure for each threat. Explain the function of a VPN with discussion of how it might be used to secure network communications. Discuss advantages and disadvantages with relevant example use cases to support your answer.

Task 4 – Design the Network.
To help businesses understand what a ‘good’ network looks like, draw a logical network diagram to illustrate a typical network design for your chosen business sector.

Research modern, common Network Operating Systems (NOS) and identify a proprietary OS and an open-source OS. In addition, you must state FOUR (4) general features of NOS and for each NOS you must provide advantages and disadvantages of each, providing a conclusion justifying your overall choice of NOS that would be suitable for the network designed in Task 4.
a) Research and identify ONE (1) proprietary NOS and ONE (1) open-source NOS.
b) State FOUR (4) features of a NOS.
c) For each NOS you identified in Task 5a), provide its advantages and disadvantages.
d) State which NOS would be suitable for the network designed in Task 4. Justify your answer.
