Brief

You have been accepted onto a foundation degree at Blackpool & the Fylde College, as such one of the key skills you need in completing the degree is to write, review and critique academic work, alongside reflecting upon your academic progress. This unit (Introduction to Academic Study) has been written specifically for these purposes.

TASK 1: ACADEMIC ARGUMENT

Before beginning the work, you should look to find around three key sources to base your description, critique and evaluation of the topic statement. You should look to have these considered by the tutor before beginning any written work in earnest, to ensure you are on the correct lines of enquiry

The main body of this task involves the writing of the report itself, as such you should follow the following structure:

• Introduction: A primer to the debate and the consideration of the relevance within the subject area

o What are the general points of view at play in the statement?

o What does the topic mean in the context of your academic area?

o Why is the topic of academic interest in your sector?

• Key Areas/Topics: An outline of the research you have considered (all the secondary work you have considered in your critique)

o A description of the relevance of this statement in the context of your topic (and the core themes considered)

o An outline of the perceived objectives of the statement (what the statement sets out to argue/discuss)

o A consideration of the positive/negative connotations of the statement

o For the sources, you should consider their various biases and the quality of the writing

o What potential elements/features/technologies were missing from the research you have undertaken (was anything missing from the research undertaken by the article which has not been taken into consideration).

• Conclusion: An overall critique of the findings (conclusions drawn)

o What themes and trends are found within the research around this topic?

o Are there any consistent obvious/subtle biases throughout each piece of research you have sourced?

o What conclusions can you draw, and how do these relate to the initial statement (does the general research agree/disagree with the statement)?

TASK 2: REFLECTION

Reflection is a key academic skill and you will be asked to reflect a number of times throughout your time on your course. Reflection gives students a chance to look back on their practice and speak honestly about their successes and failings within a particular piece of work. Be aware that throughout your academic life, there will be elements you excel at, and others you struggle with, however discussing both aspects are key to understanding how to improve in the future. As such after completing your report into the chosen statement (Task One), you are now to reflect upon your time researching, writing and reviewing your work

The reflection should:

Firstly, be written in the first person (which utilises you as the central focus, meaning you can and should use “I”)

• Secondly, be honest (you will receive marks based on the quality of this work, and the more honest you allow it to be the more you and your tutor will gain from it)

• Finally, the reflection should consider the following: o your personal attitude (both in starting the work and upon completion)

o your skill level (concerning research, academic writing, academic reading and such)

o any transferable skills you utilised and how they assisted you (e.g. organisation, communication, adaptability etc.)

o and should conclude by identifying any further learning you should look to complete in order for you to more confidently attempt this work in the future.
