Your client has a prepared design for a two storey visitors’ centre for a wildlife sanctuary at 53 Waiapu Road in Karori, Wellington. The design has been drawn up by a visiting international architectural student who volunteers for the sanctuary. The Trust Board of the sanctuary has asked you to check that the New Zealand Building Code requirements have all been met. The building is designed for six staff and up to 50 visitors. It contains a double height foyer, exhibition spaces and offices on both levels, a cafeteria, shop, public toilet facilities on the ground floor and a meeting/function room on the first floor. The construction for the proposed building will be concrete floors (slab-on-ground for ground floor, suspended precast concrete floor for first floor), structural steel columns and beams, steel roof trusses, lightweight infill panel wall cladding, and profiled long-run metal roofing. The upper floor has exposed trusses and a high ceiling as the roof will have clerestory windows to maximize natural light on the first floor and facilitate air flow for natural cooling and ventilation.
