Assignment Task:

Task:

  • This assignment needs to be uploaded to the Assignment 3 Dropbox on the ALJ112 site.
  • You will upload two files - a Word file for your transcript and a digital file for your video.
  • This digital file needs to be in an .mp3, .mp4 or .wav format.
  • This assignment asks you to produce a video news story that runs for 80 seconds.
  • The video news story needs to include video grabs from two interviews you have conducted yourself.
  • The story will include footage you have filmed and edited yourself, as well as a piece-to-camera you have done.
  • You also have to provide a transcript of your video, using the set template.
  • ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:
  • You need to come up with a news story idea of your own, research it and find relevant people to interview for it.
  • You then need to conduct and video record interviews with at least two different people.
  • You then need to record B-roll footage and a piece-to-camera.
  • You then need to edit the material to produce a video news story that includes video grabs from your interviewees.
  • This video news story should run for 80 seconds.
  • You also need to produce a transcript of the story using the set template.
  • Important things to remember:
  • STORY (TRANSCRIPT):
  • Make sure your story is newsworthy.
  • When you have gathered your story elements – B-roll footage, interviews, research, etc– you can then sit down and write your story (your transcript).
  • This needs to be a news story and should follow journalistic style.
  • This means having a strong start to your story that grabs the audiences’ attention and tells them what the story is about and what is new.
  • You need to structure your story so that it flows well and is easy to understand.
  • This transcript should be well written with no spelling, punctuation, grammar or style errors.
  • NOTE: there is a set template for a video news story transcript that you MUST follow.
  • You will find an example of the template at the end of these guidelines.
  • A video news story transcript has two columns – one that notes the vision and one that notes the audio – as well as timings.
  • You are to describe what footage is being shown, what words are being said and the timing of the video.
  • QUOTES:
  • You need to include quotes (video grabs) in your transcript from the people you have interviewed.
  • You need to include quotes from at least two different people.
  • You should aim to conduct and record both your interviews face-to-face with your interviewees.
  • You should aim to include the quotes from both your interviews as video grabs in your piece.
  • That means recording your interviews, picking out the best quotes, then editing those into your video.
  • If you can not conduct one of your interviews face-to-face in person, then consider using Skype or any other video conferencing software/app.
  • The other option for one of your interviews is to conduct it over the phone (you can still record the audio this way and use it as a soundbite).
  • The final (last) option is to conduct one of your interviews via email/message.
  • You will then need to paraphrase the quotes from this interviewee in your video as you will not have any audio or footage to use as a soundbite or video grab.
  • FOOTAGE:
  • You need to film the video footage yourself.
  • You can include some imagery produced by others but this should be credited/attributed and it should make up only a minor part of your video story (the vast majority of the footage that makes up your video needs to be filmed by you).
  • You may wish to get help filming your piece-to-camera.
  • Your footage should help tell the news story.
  • Think about using different angles, picking different scenes, including people in your footage – these things add interest to your video.
  • Your footage should be well shot and your audio should be clear.
  • Your piece-to-camera should be as professional as possible and well-scripted.
  • EDITING:
  • Editing can take time.
  • There are a few different steps to this assignment that you have to do before you get to the final stage of editing.
  • These steps are:
  • Coming up with a story idea; gathering the material (research, interviewing, filming B-roll footage, doing your piece-to-camera); writing the transcript; and recording your narration.
