Part 1: Introduction and Formal Observation (completed in the centre)

Introduction: The layout for the introduction will be the same as given out in class.

Formal observation: The ABC sample will have three columns; antecedent, behavior, and consequence

Behavior: The actions or reactions of a person in response to external or internal stimuli. A behavior can be both positive and negative.

• Example of a positive behavior- two children playing independently at the block corner, one child’s tower falls down and the other child helps to pick up the pieces to rebuild the tower.
• Example of the negative behavior-two children playing at the block corner, one child takes a block from the other child without permission

Antecedent: what occurs directly before the recorded behavior (example of possible antecedents; child’s behavior, environmental stimuli, type of play etc.)

Consequence: What occurs as a result of the child’s behavior. (example of possible consequences; the child says “thank you” for helping pick up the blocks, or the teacher gives the child what they want, or a child may be removed from the play area due to inappropriate behavior).

Students will observe one child for 45 minutes and document the following behaviors (both positive and negative).

• Sharing
• Entering play group
• Maintaining friendships
• Dispute resolution
• Following directions

When recording, first write the behavior (listed above) in the behavior column, then the student will need to record the antecedent and the consequence.

Please note, the behavior and consequence will be recorded as you observe the child. The antecedent will be recorded last, recalling from memory. The reason the antecedent is recorded last is that one does not recognize that it is an antecedent until the behavior has occurred.

Summary- (½ page minimum) Students will summarize the behaviors that were documented. Students are expected to analyze the consequences of each behavior and look for patterns. Were any consequences or antecedents similar? Or were they different? Explain how the consequence and antecedents impacted the child’s behavior. For example, every time the child shared a toy, the teacher said, “well done”. Therefore, the teacher’s consequence influenced the child, the child wanted to share more often in order to receive the positive comment.

Time Sampling

A Time sample is a formal observation that objectively documents one child’s behavior during a specific sample of time. The time sample will identify the type of play that a child engages in. The time sample will include an introduction, formal observation, and summary. Students should arrange their visit during free play time, in order to complete this assignment effectively.

Part 1: Introduction and formal observation

The layout for the introduction will be given in class, before the first observation day. The student will complete the introduction in the centre before the observation begins.

Formal observation: The time sample will be completed in 5-minute increments, for a total of 45-mintues (9 samples in total). The student will objectively record the child’s behavior throughout each of the 5 minutes increments, and include for each increment, the type of play the child is engaging in.

Part 2: Summary

Once the formal observation is complete the student will summarize what has been learned from the observation. Students will discuss play patterns of the child, child’s interest when playing, friendships, etc.
