Write a reflective text for academic purposes (500 words, 10 marks)
1. Write a reflective academic report on a recent learning experience.
2. Use an academic format to structure your reflections, e.g. the DIEP structure - describe, interpret, evaluate, plan.
3. Use current learning to inform your reflections and demonstrate your ability to make connections between experiences, ideas.
Choose a very specific experience and reflect on important understandings you gained from that experience.
Some topics for reflection could include:
a workshop or training session
a public talk or lecture
a group task or activity
a professional experience, an excursion or visit
a research task or activity
a public performance
a promotional campaign or community event
a particular situation on a work experience placement or internship
a job interview
a seminar for academic or professional purposes
Use the Questions Below to Guide your Reflection
A. Describe the activity or experience so that your reader has a good understanding of the context. Think about these questions:
Where and when did this experience take place?
Who arranged the activity and what was the purpose?
What were your first impressions about the activity?
B. Interpret the experience by thinking about these questions:
What issues, insights or questions did the experience highlight for you?
How did the experience relate to concepts or ideas covered in your course?
C. Evaluate your experience by thinking about these questions:
How helpful was this activity for you as a learner?
What role did you take in this activity? What did you do well? How could you do better?
How did others contribute to this learning experience?
D. Plan for the future based on your experience. Think about these questions:
What would you do things differently if you were to do this activity again?
How has this experience informed, confirmed or changed your plans for the future?
What actions will you take based on your reflections?
