Highlights
This assignment document is a starter document for your Research Report. It includes the Method section and the Results section that have been written for you. You have most of the references already in the reference list but you will need to add any extra references you use.
You will write all the rest of the report. We have provided information to guide you on what needs to be included in each section. You will replace all the coloured or highlighted text with your own information. The marking guide is listed at the end of this document.
Introduction
The material included in the Introduction section is a guide for what you need to do in writing the introduction. You will replace this entire section with your own introduction.
The topic statements are designed to guide the content and themes that you should cover in each of the main paragraphs of your introduction. There are a range of different arguments that are possible within each section, and your reading will guide the arguments that you decide to make. Below each topic statement are the starter references providing the key information for that topic. You will need to find extra references on emotional valence and individual differences.
1. Topic statement
You need to build an argument for the idea that unconscious stimuli may not be processed to the same extent as conscious stimuli, but may still influence our conscious behaviour.
Relevant starter references:
Deutsch & Deutsch (1963)
Merikle, Smilek, & Eastwood (2001)
2. Establishing the method (masked semantic (repetition) priming) to be used to study the topic
You need to describe priming and define what is meant by repetition priming. You then need to consider what factors influence semantic activation (processing of word meaning) and whether semantic activation is automatic.
Relevant starter references:
Neeley and Kahan (2001)
Bodner and Stalinsky (2008)
Heyman et al (2015)
Keep in mind that we used masked semantic (repetition) priming where the primes were in UPPER CASE while the targets were the same words in lower case for related conditions or different words for the unrelated condition. Our primes were presented below the threshold of conscious awareness.
3. Building an argument for the experimental manipulations used in our study
You need to find evidence that words with different types of emotional valence might be processed differently than other types of words.
Relevant starter references:
Merikle, Smilek, & Eastwood (2001)
You should also include your own references for this
You need to find evidence that spare cognitive resources or attention might influence the way we process stimuli.
Relevant starter references:
Bodner and Stalinsky (2008)
Heyman et al (2015) [note they use conscious priming]
You may also want to include your own references here
4. Introducing the notion of individual differences
Finally, apart from stimulus type and cognitive load, it might be the case that some people are simply more affected by certain characteristics of stimuli than others. You need to find evidence for this, i.e. that individual differences might predict performance on a cognitive task like ours.
The references for the two scales we used are listed in the reference list but you DO NOT need to read them. Please assume they measure what they claim to measure.
You will need to find a reference and build your own argument for how individual differences might influence responses to emotional stimuli.
