A number of conservation issues can be investigated using DNA data. DNA barcoding (sensu fate) encompasses a diverse range of techniques used to identify species that can be adapted to suit different types of DNA samples and research questions. Using the scientific literature„ describe. the DNA barcoding approaches used for each of the three following situations:

1.The detection of a particular species using an environmental DNA sample. It could be an invasive or rare/endangered species.

2.The assessment of biodiversity of a particular site This can be broad and encompass all possible species present, or limited to a particular
community/taxonomic group of interest.

3. The identification a specimen that cannot be confirmed by morphology. This could include a damaged or incomplete specimen.

You need to find and select at least one journal article for each of the three approaches listed above. Use original research papers (papers which conducted their own study), not review papers.

Your references should not include case-studies that are dealt with in detail during in Conservation Science lectures i.e. find new material and examples from refereed published papers.

For each of the papers you have selected:
1.Provide a brief background to the study. Include the aims and objectives or research question of the study.

2. Summarise the methods used Le.:
a.    focus on the nature of the DNA sample they used (mixed or pure),
b.    the type of primers they used (specific or generic/universal)
c.    the sequencing method (Sanger dideoxy or Next Generation Sequencing).

Note, sometimes no sequencing is required and gel electrophoresis may be sufficient to achieve their aim. if so, replace details of the sequencing method in part c with the gel electrophoresis methods.

3. Justify why/how they used the particular approach (how do the methods they used help them achieve their aim?).
