Background Information
The Golden Lion Tamarin (GLT) is a species of small monkey, native to Brazil, where it has declined due to habitat destruction. The GLT has one of the longest-running captive breeding programmes, with the goals of preventing extinction, and breeding animals for eventual release back to reclaimed habitat in the wild. Animals live in zoos all around the world, with coordinated management of all animals across these locations. As outlined below, you have been given access to information on individuals from one (focal) population and some summary information for populations at three other sites, where the tamarin populations have, until now, been managed independently of the global population. Instructions The assignment is very structured – you need to address each of the specific questions (see below). Details on the information available to you to answer the questions appear below these instructions. The marking criteria that will be used appears at the end of this document, along with some general suggestions and advice to help you avoid some of the more common mistakes. You are expected to justify some of your conclusions and recommendations using published information for research into genetic management (2b and 4b below). Use the reading list provided for this module as a starting point for finding such literature. Some further advice on how to cite the literature supporting your arguments is also provided below. Note: there is a strict word limit on this assignment. Do not exceed 2 pages of single spaced 12- point font with at least 2cm margins on all edges (~1000 words total). This limit does not include your bibliography of references cited, but does include all responses to the questions.
Part A (60%) Assess the appropriateness and quality of the historical management of your focal population, and make recommendations about future management of this population. Using the information that you have been provided with (described below and available via Learn.UQ):
1. Assess the current genetic status of the population. Do you think that this population has been well-managed? What evidence supports your conclusion? Be specific both about what the evidence is, and why it should be interpreted as indicating that the population has been well / poorly managed [25%].
2. Managers have decided to increase the number of golden lion tamarins held at this facility by breeding new offspring from the adults that are currently held there. Ten potential breeding pairs have been proposed (see Table 1 in accompanying file).
a. Outline what strategy you think should be applied in choosing the mating pairs to maximise the retention of genetic diversity in this population. Your arguments should be based on the published literature [20%]. b. For each of the 10 potential pairs [15%]: i. Rank them in order of breeding priority;
ii. Explain how your ranking matches the breeding strategy you have recommended under 2a, and what information you used to rank the pairs; iii. Identify any potential genetic issues there might be with breeding that pair (i.e., how each of these 10 potential pairs could affect the inbreeding coefficient and mean kinship of the next generation).
Part B (40%). Assess the genetic status of the species in captivity and make recommendations about management of gene flow among populations.
Using the information that you have been provided with (described below and available via Learn.UQ):
3. How well has each of the populations been managed to maintain their genetic diversity and health? You have answered this question for the focal population (Part A, Q1) – have the other populations been better or worse managed? What evidence supports your conclusion? Be specific. [15%].
4. What recommendations would you make about the future management of gene flow among populations (be specific about whether you would recommend moving individuals among these four populations. Which populations you would recommend exchanging individuals between, how many individuals would you move, of what sex. Mention any further recommendationsthat you would make about how to manage breeding following the exchange of individuals). Justify your recommendation in terms both of:
a. the information on the population’s genetics that you used to make this recommendation [10%]
b. published information supporting your recommendations in terms of the potential problems and/or benefits of your proposed management plan [15%]
