MODULE DESCRIPTION
This module is designed to develop students’ business communication skills – both written and oral - for the modern workplace in a globally connected world. Effective communication is vital for organisations to survive, as everything that happens within organisations involves some form of communication. Organisations can only function effectively if people are able to share their knowledge and ideas effectively with their audience. Therefore, developing good communication skills is the key to personal and business success. In the professional workplace communication is of great importance and considered to be a binding force that holds together everything. The more senior the position that someone holds in an organisation, the more essential it becomes to communicate well.
This Business Communication Skills module is an opportunity to improve students’ communication skills, whatever their existing level of proficiency. The module is placed at the beginning of the MBA programme to allow as much development of these skills during the course of the programme as possible.
MODULE OUTCOMES
After completion of the module the student will be able to:
• Analyse and use communication effectively in business and academic environments.
• Analyse communication situations and audiences to ensure effective communication.
• Create clear, concise and coherent written and oral communication messages to inform, influence and persuade target audiences.
• Use critical thinking skills to construct logical arguments.
• Apply approriate business writing techniques to develop effective executive summaries, reports, and proposals.
• Apply oral presentation techniques and visual aids (including PowerPoint) to persuade audiences.
The purpose of this assignment is to assess students’ acquired argumentative writing skills.
Write no more than 700 words (excluding references) to argue or justify a business or academic case. One of the following topics may be chosen (or any other, after you have cleared this with the lecturer):
1. Government should enforce the use of solar energy in all newly built homes
2. The free market should determine salaries; not government
3. Cars older than 15 years should be scrapped because of the pollution they cause
4. Companies should be forced to restrict CEO salaries to no more than 10 times the salary of the lowest paid worker
5. Marketing should be banned because it creates a demand for stuff that people do not need
6. Online education will lead to the demise of universities as we know it
7. The purpose of business is to maximise stakeholder value
8. For the entrepreneur cash flow is more important than profitability
9. Men should not get paternity leave from work
10. We are too dependent on computers and technology
