Cardiff Wales is providing a net increase of 629 bedrooms for student accommodation at the Marble Campus as part of a two-phase £200 million development scheme. The existing buildings on the site (Marble student residences - Site1) have been demolished to allow for the creation of 881 new bed spaces (Phase 1). Alongside, a new health centre and accommodation staff offices within the east side. The planning application was submitted at the end of August 2020 and the project started in November 2021. Vinci Construction has secured the £77m contract. The UK arm of the French firm has committed to build a low-energy-consumption student accommodation building at Marble campus in Cardiff. The three-block project is referred to as Student Accommodation Project 3 by the contractors. 

The new 26,000-square-metre accommodation buildings aspiring to be Passivhaus-certified will be laid out in four, six and eight-bed clusters. The Passivhaus certification means the building will have a low energy requirement/consumption for both heating and cooling. It’s been said that: “When completed, the development will represent one of the largest low-carbon-certified developments of its kind and a first for the university sector in the UK.”  The main part of the construction process will run in the 2022-24 period. Construction work on phase 1 of the new buildings started in summer 2021 and is to be completed and ready for occupation in September 2023.

The Context & Task
