1. Introduction

Building services, such as mechanical, fire protection and transportation services, are fundamental for any construction project, as it guarantees the building being comfortable for residents and performs adequately in terms of functionality, efficiency and safety performance. A particular service that buildings are heavily dependent on is the hydraulic services, this includes plumbing systems, stormwater drainage, grey water and black water treatment methods, hot and cold-water supply systems and rainwater collection systems. The main purpose for hydraulics services within a development is to assist in maintaining a specific level of public health standards through the project, whilst also preventing the potential threat of diseases spreading, such as legionnaire (Hydraulic Consultants Association Australasia, 2020). One specific element of hydraulic services that is solely focused in great detail within this report is hot water systems. The essential purpose of hot water circulating systems, as well as the reason why they are considered vital for any dwelling, is its capability to minimises water wastage and significantly increase convenience for individuals to obtain hot water quickly. However, this particular system is not cost efficient as it requires large amounts of energy to adequality function. The Level 33 multistorey residential project located at 313 – 323 Princes Highway Carlton, which is currently in construction, is referred to within the report to highlight a specific kind and model of hot water circulating system. In addition, demonstrating the particular steps carried out to complete the installation process by the licensed installer. Furthermore, the completed Level 33 site located at 621 – 625 Princes Highway, Blakehurst, will be utilised as a secondary case study to illustrate common issues encountered involving the hot water system (Kubba, 2012). Specifications - For the Level 33 project located in Carlton, the hydraulic engineer has specified the use of the typical Rinnai hot water system, Demand Duo 4 with heavy duty condenses, also known as the DD4HDC211i model, to be manufactured and supplied by Rinnai and installed by Plumb Group Pty Ltd. This particularly model requires 211 megajoules of energy to adequately function and, as indicated by the ‘I’ within the model name, is an internal hot water system designed for enclosed hot water plant rooms. The figure below demonstrates a standard shop drawing depicting the generic layout for the hot water system. Figure 2.1: Exploded Assembly Diagram for a DD4HDC211 Some essential specifications in regards to the DD4HDC211i model is that it heats and stores water at 65oC and releases into the outlet through the building at 75 oC for occupants. More importantly it doesn’t allow the water’s temperature to drop below 60 oC for health reasons. The ‘COMBO Tank’ is capable of storing 315L of water and releases the hot water at 850 kPa for efficient spread travel of the necessary distance to reach an occupant’s unit and circulate back to the tank. However, the hot water circulating throughout the building is not too exceed 1.2m/s velocity. As discussed with Ray M, a sales representative for Rinnai, the expected total lead time for a DD4HDC211i hot water system to go from manufacture to being delivered onsite is an estimated time of 8 weeks.

This is split into 6 weeks for the manufacturer to completely construct that particularly model and then 2 weeks to successfully deliver it to Level 33’s construction site in Carlton. Once the hot water system arrives on site, the director of Plumb Group Pty Ltd, Charlie H, roughly estimates that the installation process will require 4 to 5 working days to be successfully completed. Construction Technology 6 Major Assessment 300725 Individual Report Anthony Hanna Page 6 19063153 Due to the DD4HDC211i being an internal model specifically designed for enclosed spaces, as demonstrated through figure 2.2 and 2.3, resulted in the requirement of a 4 co-axial flueing being incorporated into the design to allow for adequate air supply and ventilation for the hot water system. As stated within the manufacture’s specifications, the 4 manifolds will be constructed out of aluminium with the total flueing length being 4 meters per heater to successfully reach the outer area of the enclosed room.
