1.0 Introduction
This report has been written as an analytical study into the stormwater component of the hydraulics service at the aforementioned location, namely, 787 Merrylands Road, Greystanes – The Proposed Childcare Centre constructed by Redan Constructions. This report and its respective sections and subsections will delve into the stormwater services at the location, focusing on the design and construction issues that were present and promptly solved in conjunction with the Project Manager and Hydraulic Services Engineer. In order to effectively present an analysis of the stormwater system, Redan Constructions have provided all relevant specifications, stormwater and architectural drawings, site photographs and discussion from various parties related to the stormwater system on site. These components have all been analysed and will be presented as both self-serving evidence and for additional understanding within the report and its various sections. It can be said that the role of construction is for shelter from the elements, the most invasive of those elements being water. Thus, stormwater is relevant to every project constructed, and thus, in selecting to study and present a case analysis on it, this report aims to greatly increase individual understanding of such a pivotal part of the construction process. 4 2.0 Project Details The proposed childcare centre currently being constructed at 787 Merrylands Road, Greystanes is being built on a site of approximately 1500m2 (1499m2 to be exact). In design terms, it is comprised of a basement and two stories. With a maximum capacity (post Section 455) of 118 students, adequate external ‘play’ area has been incorporated as well on both levels of the project. Given the size and nature of the design, this project incorporated extensive stormwater works, which changed continually as the project continued, with challenges in design being faced by both the builder and the engineer. (Figure 1,2 – 787 Merrylands Road Architectural Plans - Baini Designs) 5 3.0 The Stormwater Process As with all stormwater, the process of collecting the services namesake, stormwater, begins at the highest points of the project. In the initial design of this project, it would be the metal roofing of both stories of the proposed childcare centre. It is collected by the various gutters and passed down via the multiple downpipes on the project. (Figure 3 – Roof Drainage and Catchment Plan – Capital Engineering Consultants) As seen in Figure 3, there are 11 downpipes which were incorporated in the initial design of the stormwater system. The gutters catch the stormwater directed to them by the various falls of the roof as illustrated by the fall arrows in Figure 3. 6 (Figure 4 – Detailed Stormwater Drainage Plan – Capital Engineering Consultants) As seen in Figure 4, the teal coloured dotted line details the PVC pipes which carry the stormwater which has been captured from the various downpipes and external falls through the pit system to ultimately end up in the OSD located on site (double lined areas circled in the above figure 4). From the OSD, the water, when required to avert overfill and flooding, travels out due to gravity and clever design via the blue dotted path (PVC) to terminate into the street stormwater system on Merrylands Road. Would this have been a development with no basement this would be the complete stormwater system, however, this development incorporates a one level basement, and as such, there is an extra component to the stormwater system.
