ASSIGNMENT: Document Analysis
To consider the contribution of Church documents to the teaching and learning of RE. In considering Church documents you are required to reflect on the relationships between RE in the school, parish and family and the relationships between religion and spirituality in children and young people.
The task:
Task is a document analysis of ecclesial and contemporary literature that requires students to demonstrates learning outcomes 3, 4 and 5. In this task students appraise the contribution of Catholic Church documents on Religious Education and catechesis to the theory and practice of Religious Education (LO3, LO5) by critiquing the relationship of school, family and parish in Religious Education (LO4). The principal purpose of the task is to assist students in gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of the contribution that the learning area of Religious Education can make to the overall religious and spiritual development of children and young people.
-appraise the contribution of Catholic Church documents on religious education and catechesis to the theory and practice of religious education.
-critique the relationship of school, family and parish in religious education.
-analyse some contemporary approaches to religious education in light of philosophical, theological, theoretical and educational perspectives.
The task is taken from the generic unit outline, but we can vary it (within reason!). For example, since the connection between parish, family and school is tenuous you need not write about it extensively except to say that!
So the task can be ‘broken up’ this way:
Choose 2-3 Church documents to be your focus of attention.

Catechesis is characterised in recent Catholic Church documents as taking on different forms and functions at different stages of a person's life cycle. Church documents direct that catechesis ought to be adapted to the needs and interests of people as they experience different stages of their life journey. This document, published in English as the General Directory for Catechesis (GDC), was published in 1997 as an update of the original General Catechetical Directory (GCD). This original publication was requested by the Second Vatican Council and published in 1971 after a detailed process of examination of the Church's traditional and contemporary practice of catechesis. The document has been influential among local Catholic Churches which have produced their own guidelines and policies on catechesis in the light of the directives contained in the GCD.

Religious instruction is characterised in this document as a much more limited enterprise with narrower aims than catechesis. Indeed, the aim of religious instruction in Catholic schools is determined to be the enhancement of knowledge of the Christian tradition.
70 Finally, religious instruction in the school needs to be coordinated with the catechesis offered in parishes, in the family, and in youth associations.
Use at least the paragraphs that we studied to summarise the contribution these documents make to understanding RE.
Offer a critique of their contribution e.g. if a document says school, family and parish you may talk about the reality of the links being tenuous (as in the NCEC Framing paper); if a document refers to catechesis you may critique it by referring to the diversity in the classroom which may require evangelisation as the main aim of RE (as in diocesan documents or other Church documents); or broadly the task of a school might be the maintenance of Catholic identity and what do Church documents and/or other writers say about how/why we might need to do that or . . .
Then finally make some reference to the broad aims of RE e.g. promotion of spirituality/religiosity or connecting Catholic Social Teaching to issues in society or . . . and support your considered broad aims to Church documents and/or scholarly works.
