Unit Learning Outcomes

  1. Undertake a survey to establish a station network for horizontal and vertical control.

  2. Explain the process of undertaking a topographic survey.

  3. Apply industry standard techniques in the production, transferring and staking out of co-ordinates of multiple construction elements.

  4. Prepare a report on the causes of errors and techniques to improve accuracy, including the use of digital data.

Assignment Brief

Cinec wants to put up its Law and Medical Faculties in their premises at Malabe. Contract for ground preparation and putting up of buildings was awarded to Access Construction Company. The Access entrust you to engage on land surveying component.

The full topographic survey is required for the initial and detailed design process. Part of the requirement is to set a control network of stations that can be used for future surveys also connected with putting up of other faculties such as Built Environment & Spatial Sciences and to aid in the setting out once construction commences.

Horizontal and vertical controls are developed to create a framework around which other surveys can be adjusted. These control surveys are used for accurate mapping projects in the construction of large buildings, roadways, power lines, tunnels, and many other high precision projects.

Brief how you plan this job to fulfil their requirements establishing control points with providing sufficient access for buildings. These control networks consist of stable, identifiable points tied together by extremely accurate observations.

From these observations, datum values and coordinates are computed. These values provide the common basis that is so important to surveying and mapping activities.

Proceed work submit, net of work control points  showing in a plan ,level diagrams(ground profile) and contour plans with a detail report.

In addition you are required to produce  plans with connected reports on the plot for submission to the client including the following:

  • Report on the corrected coordinates and heights for the stations and explain the stages.

  • Plan of the Control networks should consists with Horizontal control network standards and Vertical control network standards comprising series of points are spatially located for the purpose of topographic surveying.

  • A comparison of the accuracy of the network compared to national standards.

  • An explanation of the process of conducting a topographic survey. The process involved in carrying out the Topographic Surveying of the area, the capture and processing of the field data, and the subsequent production of a plan or map.

  • A critical analysis of the accuracy achieved including the influence on the topographic survey

  • Techniques to improve accuracy.

  • The client requires the network to be robust with a minimum of five stations.

Tasks

  1. Check relevant area with available plans and describe the types of control networks that are available for surveying, including examples of local and national stations

  2. If local or national control traverses are not available, run a close loop control traverse survey using Total Station. Carry out a closed traverse of the station network which includes heights, Horizontal/internal angles and line lengths.

  3. Calculate from the survey the corrected easting, northings and heights of each of the stations.

  4. Also include an explanation of how you achieved the corrected co-ordinates and heights.

  5. Set out grid lines and required points according to the given data with the help of setting out techniques using tape and pole or Total Station.

  6. Describe the types of control networks that are available for vertical control , including examples of local and national stations

  7. If local or national control traverses are not available ,run a close loop levelling control  traverse  to provide vertical controls

  8. After supplying controls levels for the TBMS, take spot heights at 5m intervals.

  9. Using the newly created stations complete a topographic survey of the plot.

  10. Describe your coding and data transfer systems in producing the completed survey.

  11. Finally prepare a  level diagrams(ground profile) and contour plans with a detail report

  12. Prepare a report on the causes of errors

  13. A comparison of the accuracy of the network compared to national standards and techniques to improve accuracy, including the use of digital data.

  14. Review the content of the survey in summary form, including the survey’s ability to assist the design team.
