1. When using an approximate model to design a controller, you need to show a plot in Simulink to compare the responses of the approximate model and the original process. You should not use “Least-squared” approximation in Excel because it will take a lot of time to do so. Consequently, you will not have enough time to answer other questions.
2. To design a controller, if you use a ready-prepared spreadsheet, you still need to write the configuration of the controller in the answer page and refer the calculation to your spreadsheet. If you do not use a ready-prepared spreadsheet, you need to show the formula used and the calculation. Make sure that your spreadsheet work with Window 10.
3. Normally we do not mark the MATLAB script. The script is only a tool to make it easier for you in the test. Therefore, your Simulink programs must be ready for us to run.
4. You do not have to save the graph generated by a Simulink program, but you need to run long enough time to cover a full trajectory or all trajectories and each response should be properly labelled.
5. Disturbance change and setpoint are not the same, so you must use two separate sources, one for each of them. When tuning the controller, all disturbances should be turned off.
6. Normally you cannot make the first order system and the second order system exhibit constant oscillation. In other words you cannot find the ultimate gains for those systems.
7. When design a feedforward controller you must write the two components Gff and Gst based on the given process and disturbance first. If the two components are not realizable and/or not stable then you can replace them with other models, which are stable and realizable.
8. When investigating the stability of a closed-loop system, you should show in detail how you get the characteristic equation and how to use the Direct Substitution method to solve for the ultimate gain. If you want to use Routh test as shown in the textbook, you need to show the Routh Array as well. Finally, you need to develop a block diagram in Simulink to test the results found.
9. Tuning rules and tuning approaches: You will use one or more of the following
• Stability Margin
• Approximate model
• Auto tuning with Relay Controller
• Special: Pole Placement Design, Direct Synthesis
• Controller structure: Conventional, Commercials, Feedforward and Cascade
• Upper and lower limits of the gains of a P controller
