1. INTRODUCTION
Advice: this section needs to be completed for assignment 05. Read the lesson about writing an Introduction at the HRFIN81 site of myUnisa and apply the guidelines provided. Delete this section once you have written this section. The introduction should be 400 – 750 words long.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1Determinants influencing platinum prices
Many factors can influence the platinum spot prices; like any other commodity, supply and demand determine platinum, which will need a proper evaluation to forecast future platinum prices. The following factors influence platinum prices:
2.1.1Supply
Mauve (2000) defined supply as “the provision of a commodity”. An analyst needs to understand the impact of the following factors on availability. According to Tilton (1985 as cited in Genc, 2008)
The price of the commodity
The status of the commodity
Inputs costs
Socio-political disruptions
The structure of the market
Technological change
Governmental activities
Total global supply estimation of a commodity calculation will be the total amount made available to the market for that commodity; primary (individual and main products) and secondary (recycling scrap metal) production is what made mineral commodities to be known.
2.1.2Demand
Mauve (2000) defined supply as “the desire that a consumer has for a commodity”. According to Tilton (1985 as cited in Genc, 2008), these are the factors that drive demand for most mineral commodities
The price of the commodity
Income (growth of GDP)
The availability of substitutes for a commodity
The availability of complementary substances in combination with a commodity
Consumer preferences
Technological change
Governmental activities
Analysis and prediction of demand for a commodity needs a critical understanding of these factors, and there are different stages used to analyse demand
