Assignment Task

Task 1
Consider the 16-bit floating-point number representation system following IEEE-754 standard, also known as half-precision floating-point format.
A). Describe the 16-bit floating point number representation system by answering the following questions:
a). What is the smallest positive number in this system?
b). How many real numbers are there in this system?
c). What is the machine epsilon for the system?

B). Determine the absolute and relative errors when representing the number p using the 16-bit floating- point number representation system following IEEE-754 standard. Let the 8 digits of your UB student number be represented as d0d1d2d3d4d5d6d7. You must use the p value specifically defined by three
digits fo your UB number d4, d5, d7 as given in the following table.

No d4 d5 d7 p value
1 Even Even Even 34.3
2 Even Even Odd 65.8
3 Even Odd Even 52.4
4 Even Odd Odd 71.1
5 Odd Even Even 37.6
6 Odd Even Odd 82.3
7 Odd Odd Even 61.7
8 Odd Odd Odd 93.4

Task 2
The following equations represent two ellipses:

(x − 2)2 + (y − 3 + 2x)

2 = 5 (1)

2(x − 3)2 +
y
3
2
= 4. (2)

Requirements:
Write a MATLAB script ‘ellipsesTask.m’ to
• plot the two ellipses in one figure using Matlab function plot
– The plot should be clear and contains correct labelling
• find the coordinates of all the intersections of the two ellipses defined in Eqs. (1) and (2).
– Convert the intersection-finding problem into a root-finding problem
– Use Newton’s method to find and print the coordinates of all the intersections of the two ellipses
– The Newton’s method implemented should stop based on a given error margin, e.g.  = 0.001.
