Scenario

You have just been hired by one of the following divisions of the Wagner Corporation.  For this assignment, you can choose which one of the four that you are working for -- Wagner Real Estate Company; CPW Loan Company; Wagner Day Care or Wagner Computer Repair Company. Before you begin, you need to think about the technology, software, hardware, peripherals and other components that you will use in your new position. On your first day on the job, you found that you have an old computer in your office with an old operating system and some old versions of software installed on it.  You began by updating the browsers and then found that you were not able to work efficiently because your computer is very slow, will not allow you to install any alternative software and keeps freezing up on you. When you decided to try to update your antivirus and run a scan on the computer, you did not find any antivirus software installed. You also found out that you did not have any way to print in your office.

After becoming a little frustrated, you went to see your new boss and explained the situation to her.  Your new boss, Ms. Wagner, mentioned that they were aware of the old computer and then asked you to research and recommend a computer system to equip your office. The Information Technology (IT) department has provided you with a table to complete with the minimum system requirements for each of the systems.  The budget office has also provided you with the Not to Exceed or TOTAL price that they will pay for your new computer and any components that you will need. Your job is to find three different brands of Windows based computers (laptops or desktops only) that will meet or beat the following specifications while staying within the total budget. 

After you have found three computers/laptops to compare you will need to fill in the information in the table that I have provided.

If you exceed the budget, your boss will summon you and your job (your grade) may be in jeopardy, so be careful!

Assignment Instructions

The paper will consists of FIVE parts:

1. An INTRODUCTION to the assignment briefly describing the purpose of your paper. Be sure to include the name of the company that you are working for, what your position will be, etc.) You will also need to provide details on some of the job duties that you will be responsible for and the technology that you will have to use.  For example, databases, spreadsheets, cameras, scanners, printers, to name just a few.

2. In the table (I will provide instructions so you can copy and fill in my example) you will need to choose three different  makes/models of computers that you will compare for your job specifications. You can choose to compare either three Windows desktops or three Windows laptop systems. Each desktop or laptop must meet the specifications provided by the IT department and the allowed budget amount. This amount can be found at the end of the table.  Make sure to include all the information required for the comparisons in the table (if it is not in the table, you will lose points). Be sure to add in the total cost of each system after you complete your comparison, you will need to give your RECOMMENDATION for the best system based on your comparisons.  You will also need to state specifically which system you recommend and why it is better than the other two.  

3. After you have completed your comparisons on the computer systems, you will need to include THREE software applications that you will need for your position. Again, in a table provided for you.  Microsoft Office OR Office 365 is a suite of applications including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint – counts as ONE application software.  You are welcome to use alternative software, but you may have to check to see if it can be used for a business – read the EULA if you are not sure.  Be sure to add each of the applications and the cost for each in the chart.

You will also need to include THREE system utilities that you will need to keep your system running, up to date or for maintenance. Please be sure to include the name of each utility and what it can do to help your system. Be sure to include the cost, if any, or where it can be downloaded in the chart. 

After you have completed your comparison, you will need to give YOUR recommendation for the best of the three systems stating specifically which system you recommend and why it is better than the other two.
