- Psychological problems among employees increased from 6.3% to 50.9% during the pandemic. Unemployment was a large factor for this
- Employees experienced more fatigue and mental illness as their working hours increased in the WFH environment. No rise in productivity was seen however
- Food intake, physical activites, and well-being changed through the pandemic.
- Pressure to meet deadlines lead to poor mental health.
What can be done to help employees WFH
- Setting a positive example for behaviour is essential. Senior managers can allow employees to put their limits and self-care first. By offering adequate breaks, they may ensure that the resources are psychologically ready to work harder. As a result, some workplace flexibility—such as time for relaxation and exercise—can help employees' mental health
Risk Factors for Employee Mental Health
- excessive workload or understaffing, under-use of skills, unsafe or poor working conditions, unclear job roles, organisational culture with negative behaviours, inflexible hours, over-promotions, job insecurities and conflicts of work and life
- In the informal economy, where there is no legislative protection for health and safety, more than half of the world's labour is employed. These people frequently labour in hazardous conditions, put in long hours, lack access to social or financial safeguards, and experience discrimination, all of which can be detrimental to mental health as mentioned by WHO (2022).
Aims and Objectives
- Aim of the study = analyse the factors related to office resources and the work environment to understand how it impacts the employees' mental health. It aims to analyse pre and post covid-19 data to determine how the trend of mental health issues changed with changes in the work environment.
- This aim is achieved using the objectives:
- To understand risk factors for employees with mental health illness
- To examine how covid-19 has impacted mental health stability.
- To identify the factors and reasons modern business environments contribute to employee fatigue and burnout.
- To recommend the protocols and actions to combat the growing rate of mental illness among employees.

- What was the rate of mental illness among employees in pre and post covid-19 situations?
- How do the changes in technologies affect changes in the rate of mental illness among employees?
- What are the major protocols and procedures to adopt as an employer to combat employees’ increasing mental health illness?
