This case study gives us an insight on Facebook against its users. Facebook is a social networking service founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his fellow college roommates in 2004. It started as The Facebook and was only limited to Harvard students initially, later it grew to other Ivy League colleges and around the world. It
became very popular among the teenagers in the early 2000s. This social networking service created a pathway to other technological services. Any one older than 13 years with a valid email address can create their facebook account. It was initially used to communicate with friends and connect with people around the world.
There are 2.7 billion users on facebook as of 2020, that is 28.5% of the world population. It gave the users a timeline to share their pictures, join groups, games, connect with people by just sending a friend request. It is free of cost to join in, the facebook makes money from the ads on the website. The first ever lawsuit to be filed against facebook was one of the co-founders of the HarvardConnection, alleged Zuckerberg stole the idea and some of the code to create Facebook. It was settled in 2008 with stock certificates to the plaintiffs. Due to beacon service in 2007, a minor glitch caused the code to release on the website which gave public details access. A class action lawsuit has been filed and ended by 2009 with a settlement. In the same year, lawsuits were being filed against Facebook by the users for violating user privacy. It claimed that they published user activity from third-party applications in user news feed. For example, games; the results/scores were made public to a larger community.
