Scenario
At Sullivon Constructions they believe that every person who works within the company or enters a work site must be provided with a safe workplace. As part of their legal and ethical obligations,Sullivon Constructions takes every step to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all personnel.
You have been part of the Sullivon team for a while now and Jai has decided you need to take on more responsibility helping him with the different work sites. As part of your new responsibilities you need to manage the health and safety on the different sites and ensure that all the safety legislations and organisational policies and procedures are being followed.
Jai has asked you to address the health and safety at one of the sites in particular, as it has been brought to his attention that the site is not up to scratch regarding the safety standards. He needs this addressed immediately to avoid any incidents or penalties if the site is inspected by the authorities.
Jai has requested that you:
- Determine the areas of risk
- Complete the inspection report
- Advise him of your recommendations to mitigate the identified risks using the appropriate control measures.
Part A:Identify and report on risks in the workplace
For this activity refer to the image from the work site discussed with Jai, provided in Appendix A. This image displays several areas of non-compliance with WHS regulations and codes of practice.
Based on the image, complete a risk assessment and provide a report which includes a completed inspection. The report must also include the specific WHS legislations and requirements for various contractors working on the site.
For this activity you have been provided with a report template titled Inspection and Risk AssessmentReport(Appendix B), which must be completed, addressing each point listed below:

1. List a minimum of two (2) risks which are specific to each of the following occupations working on a construction site:
• Bricklayers

Having completed your site Inspection and Risk Assessment Report you must now email the documents to Jai and consult with him regarding your findings, recommendations and proposed control measures.
To complete this activity, you will need to draft an email, using the Email template (Appendix C), and outline:
1. Your concerns regarding the site and your identified hazards and risks
2. Seek Jai’s advice on how best to implement the controls in a timely and efficient manner
3. Refer specifically to the organisational and legislative requirements which must be adhered to when managing WHS at the site (use information obtained in Part A)
4. Provide Jai with your proposed methods for monitoring and reviewing the control measures once they have been implemented to ensure that the site remains compliant with WHS and organisational requirements.

Office use only – Assessors feedback
Part C: Standards, Codes and Regulations
Jai has reviewed your report and recommendations and has provided you with the necessary feedback regarding the methods of control. As a direct result of your site inspection and that of several other sites, it has been identified that the work teams and contractors on the sites are not current in their understanding and knowledge of WHS and general regulatory requirements which must be met.
Jai has requested that you research and develop a table which outlines key standards and regulations which must be followed when working on a construction site. He also wants you to develop an appropriate strategy for communicating the WHS practices required when working for Sullivon Constructions.
For this activity you must complete the following tasks:
Task 1:
Using the table provided in Appendix D; Standards, Acts and Regulations, and using thelink SAI GlobalandSafeWork AustraliaConduct research for each listed item and provide a brief outline (one paragraph) for each. Remember to use language which will be easily understood by the work teams and contractors on the site.Approach this as if you were explaining the Standards, Acts and Regulations to colleagues.
Included in the table you will also need to explain the purpose of a safe work method statement on a site.

Office use only – Assessors feedback
Task 2:
Create a word document and:
• Develop a strategy for communicating the WHS Standards, Acts and Regulations you have developed in Task (1), as part of the Sullivon education program, to the work team and contractors on the site which meet all statutory requirements and what type of training or education program should be implemented.
• Outline how you will monitor the effectiveness of this program and how you will review the success. Things to consider are;
o How often will you consult with the teams to make sure they understand what is required?
o How will you encourage them to participate in WHS management and assist with monitoring WHS on the site?
o What process will you implement to establish gaps in skills and knowledge?
o What will be your benchmark for determining the successful implementation of WHS practices on the site?
