Background
To support the role of the builder in being able to produce construction industry documentation, you have access to a professional intranet that provides a simulated building company, RB Holdings. RB Holdings functions as a workplace environment where project-based assessments can be undertaken using industry standard documentation, plans, activities, responsibilities and procedures.
The RB Holdings business structure allows simulation of work environments such as, but not limited to, design offices, site offices and construction sites. RB Holdings provides students with relevant documentation that is to industry standard that allows students to experience a professional simulation of a construction office environment. RB Holdings is a fictitious organisation that has been created purely for educational purposes. RB Holdings materials are accessed via a secure website that is copyright of © TAFE NSW.
Part 1: Practical Tasks
Scenario
You are employed by RB Holdings as an Assistant Construction Manager. You have recently been working with Annie Osborne, who is the company’s Project Manager. You have been reviewing the company profile to enable tendering for a larger range of contracts that are becoming available. The profile has been finalised and Annie has asked you to review a list of tender opportunities and propose a suitable project that RB Holdings could bid for.
Task 1: Select suitable contracts
Task 1.1
Create an electronic or cloud based portfolio structure to be used as storage for the research and written materials associated with this assessment. Use an appropriate file name that includes the unit name, number and the task. The teacher may request access to the portfolio.

Read the company profile extract below and review the list of tender opportunities and their scope of works. You are to select the most suitable contract and report back to Annie using the company memo form provided below with the following criteria included:

Highways and Byways Services / M21 Tumbalong Road Upgrade - Stage 1 (between East Town Centre Road and new Pigtown Road) -
This is a quality assurance contract.
Tenders are invited from prequalified contractors with Highways and Byways Services under the National Prequalification System for Civil (Road and Bridge) Construction Contracts at Roadworks Category R4 and Financial Level 50 or higher, for construction of the Tumbalong Road from East Town Centre Road to new pigtown Road (Stage 1).
The earthworks and drainage components of the work must be carried out by contractors registered in Categories E and D respectively or prequalified for roadworks.

Tender for Construction of Public Toilets Loftus Street, South Bigtown
The works to be executed under the Contract includes the supply of all materials, plant, equipment and labour for the construction of, but not necessarily be limited to the following:
All Preliminary costs associated with the completion of the works
Demolition and disposal of existing paved/concrete/bitumen footpath and road pavement off-site to approved tipping site. Works to include making good to work disturbed)
Removal of turf/grass cover to a nominal depth of 75mm. Selected topsoil below the stripped surface in proposed excavation areas to be stockpiled for re-use.
Excavation/bulk earthworks – including levelling, grading, trimming, proof rolling, compacting, scabbling and similar faces of all excavations, keeping sides plumb, backfilling, consolidating, stockpiling of topsoil and disposing surplus.
Disposal excess soil off site at a registered landfill or for possible recycling
Construction of paved footpath (incl concrete blinding slab and steel edge), concrete footpath, re-grade and install topsoil and turf (80:20 sand & soil mix and Kikuyu turf) and supply and installation of two (2) bench seats (sub-surface mounted). The installation of the toilet block to be co-ordinated with Exeloo Pty Ltd. The Tenderer is to allow for site preparation & traffic control and associated costs for all of works.
Certification by Geotechnical Engineer prior to pouring of footings that subgrade meets minimum bearing pressure requirements
All service works associated with connecting the building. This includes Electrical, Hydraulic and sewer works (Submit applications for water and sewer connection application). Contractor to allow for services to run into services hole within building slab. Principal to connect the services internally form the service hole.
Task 1 - Student Checklist
To successfully complete Task 1, the student must complete the following:
Created a portfolio in an electronic format or other as directed by the teacher.
Review the list of tender opportunities and their scope of works.

Once all of the above tasks are complete for Task 1, place the memo into the portfolio and send to the teacher for marking.
Scenario:
Joe Lurgano, RB Holdings Construction Manager, has ask you to assist in selecting a contractor for the supply, placement and finishing of concrete to the driveway of the 1 Lake Rd, Toronto project.
Joe has sent you the Transmittal Form and relevant documents to enable you to evaluate the tender documentation. He has included the quotes received from various contractors, for the supply and placement of the ready-mixed concrete. These quotes have been based on the bill of quantities taken from the specification for that part of the project.
Part 2: Evaluate and report on tenders
Task 2.1
You are to carefully examine the following RB Holdings documentation and respond as instructed in line with their policy and procedures. In finalising your documentation you are to create the ’Bidders Evaluation Sheet’ in an excel program and auto sum the appropriate columns.
Task 2.2
The student is to provide a document that will attach to the ’Bidders Evaluation Sheet’ of at least three questions that may need to be asked of the contractors in order to clarify their quotes. (Hint: address this after completing task 2.1).
