  • To achieve a satisfactory result, your assessor will be looking for your ability to demonstrate the following key skills/tasks/knowledge to an acceptable industry standard:
  • ELEMENT 1: Evaluate commonly used methods of water storage supply and layouts.
  • Water supply, connection and layout are sketched for a residence connected to a town supply or a tank storage supply in accordance with relevant building regulations and standards.
  • Use of pumps to maintain water levels in storage tanks is documented for single and two-stage pumping.
  • Limitations of water storage tanks connected for multi-function and single function services are identified and addressed
  • ELEMENT 2: Evaluate methods of sewerage and drainage disposal and their layouts.
  • Sewerage connection and layout are sketched in accordance with relevant building regulations and standards.
  • Different stack types are assessed with reference to number of fixtures and building type.
  • Fixture units are identified.
  • Methods used to connect main drains to local authority sewers are assessed against relevant building standards.
  • Disposal of sewerage from fixtures situated below the level of the local authority sewer is assessed in accordance with relevant building regulations and standards.
  • Collection, treatment and disposal of prohibited discharges are monitored for non-domestic buildings.
  • ELEMENT 4: Evaluate the range of hot water systems.
  • Operating principles of various types of hot water systems are evaluated.
  • Suitable hot water system is selected according to accepted and agreed requirements and specifications.

  • Assessment Instructions
  • Please refer to both the plans for the Ferguson St Project (Residential) and the Bellbrook Theatre and Professional Centre (Commercial) for the following Assessment tasks.
  • Note the different building classifications for the two projects:
  • Ferguson Street Project: Class 2 & 7a
  • Bellbrook Theatre Project: Class 5,6, 7a & 9b
  • Water Supply and Storage
  • Task 1.1
  • On a photocopy or scanned image of the Ferguson Street project plans supplied in the Resource book: Plans as part of the learning materials, draw the hot and cold water services for Unit 3 and Unit 8. Your answer must be in accordance with AS/NZS 3500.1:2018, BCA Vol 3 (Plumbing Code of Australia), and the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code.
  • Your drawing should clearly indicate the following information:
  • clear delineation of upper and lower floor services
  • position of the hot water system indicating type and capacity
  • all risers and droppers of the water reticulation system
  • approximate pipe sizes.
  • You may assume that the council main water supply line is at the back of the units, ie between the unit and the boundary. Copies of all relevant information used on the project must be submitted as part of your answers to allow the assessor access to that information. Use black and coloured pens.

  • Explain the difference between single and two-stage pumping.
  • For this particular project, identify the correct pumping system to maintain water levels.
  • Task 1.3
  • Identify the limitations of water storage tanks connected for multi-functional and single function services. How are these limitations addressed?

  • Identify two (2) typical water supply faults and one WHS problem that may be encountered on Medium Rise projects. For each fault and problem, identify the actions that are necessary to be taken to rectify the fault and problem.

Describe when and where the following may occur, and identify the most common methods and devices used to prevent them. Your answer must be in accordance with AS/NZS 3500.1:2018, BCA Vol 3 (Plumbing Code of Australia), and the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code.

Assume that the connection to the main drain is at the front of the units, ie along the front boundary alignment. Include approximate pipe sizes. Your answer must be in accordance with AS/NZS 3500.2:2018, BCA Vol 3 (Plumbing Code of Australia), and the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code.
  • Give a detailed explanation of statutory regulations concerning the sanitary drainage design, including:
  • licencing requirement of both the designer and installer.

  • methods of connection to the main drain

  • For the Ferguson Street project, describe the various types of plumbing stacks and how they relate to the number of fixtures associated with those stacks.

  • Write an email to Mr Watanabe with your recommendation and ask for his approval to proceed. Note that Ken speaks English as a second language. Include a schematic sketch plan/ elevation and specifications of an acceptable device in your email.

  • Identify three (2) typical drainage faults and one WHS problem that may be encountered on Medium Rise projects. For each fault and problem, identify the actions that are necessary to be taken to rectify the fault and problem.

  • For the Bellbrook Theatre and Professional Centre, identify three (3) possible prohibited discharges. Discuss how the collection, treatment and disposal of these discharges will be monitored. Refer to the relevant Australian Standards for requirements and process.

  • Assume that a medium rise building project designed for less than 30 people has no connection to the local authority sewerage drainage system. Explain requirements of a septic or bio chemical unit for the treatment of the sanitary drainage and effluent disposal.
