Task Instructions

Consider the following five ethical dilemmas and provide a response of about 200 words for each dilemma. Submit your answers with references in a word document. The references do not form part of the word limit.

  1. A counsellor has had several sessions with a client whose presenting issue is anxiety. The counselling is proceeding well. When the client comes to the next session she tells the counsellor that she has lost her job and cannot afford to continue however, if the counsellor is willing, she could clean the counsellor’s house weekly in exchange for the counselling session.

How should the counsellor respond? Explain your answer.

  1. A counsellor has a good therapeutic relationship with a client who has come to counselling to help build her self-confidence. Towards the end of the fifth session she suddenly discloses that she was raped by her boss in her first job when she was 18. The counsellor does not have experience in sexual assault counselling.

  1. Rajiv keeps meticulous notes on each counselling session including emails and text messages. He allows time to write up each session between clients. His colleague, Sue, says he is wasting time. She says there is no need to keep such detailed records because all that is needed is a file with the client’s details and presenting issue, any assessments and a summary at the end of the counselling.

  1. A counsellor is at a barbecue at the weekend when he meets a former client who turns out to be a good friend of his neighbour. The former client asks him and his wife together with the neighbour to a party the next week.

  1. A client has been seeing the therapist for a long time about his persistent low mood . The therapist feels very supportive of his client’s efforts to deal with his issues and the client has made great progress. In one session the client reveals he has sexually abused his daughter. He insists it only happened once, he knows it was wrong and swears it will never happen again. He begs the therapist not to report him because he is the sole breadwinner for the family and fears he may get arrested and the whole family will suffer.
