Highlights
Problem Statement Research involves more than just choosing and applying a method. The research agenda has to be planned and executed, the data need to be captured and archived, ethics approval may need to be obtained if human subjects are involved, and finally the results need to be written-up into a report for dissemination and publication.
Within this module you are asked to plan a hypothetical1 research project, without executing the experimental or other “practical” parts of it (see footnote 1). Other parts, which do not require ethics approval or the like, such as gathering information on the research topic, formulating research question(s), and mapping out the elements of the research project, you are required to do.
The coursework, therefore, will address all of these aspects to some extent.
Caution: in case of ambiguity in either the problem statement or assessment criteria, the interpretation of the assignment tutor will apply. As such, if any statement is unclear, seek clarification rather than make assumptions, as your assumptions are likely to differ from the tutor’s interpretation.
Deliverables Part A – Research Infrastructure and Process (10%) This is an individual component involving the creation and regular use of typical research infrastructure tools.
Plan and Trello Board
Breakdown the tasks involved in hypothetical research project (see Part B) into small coherent tasks2 and keep track of you project planning and literature review in the Trello board. More tasks can be added or removed during the course of the semester as your idea of your research project gets more concrete. In particular:
1. Create a Trello board (www.trello.com) and invite me as collaborator.
2. Create as least the three columns “Things To Do”, “Doing”, “Done”, maybe also “Backlog”
3. Add each of the project-related tasks that you foresee or plan to execute during the drafting of your project to your “To-Do” or “Backlog” columns.
4. Keep your board up-to-date and track your progress. We expect that you update your Trello board regularly as you work on your coursework, which means several times per week for the majority of weeks (8 or more weeks). Note that the due date is the date up to which we will consider your use of the board.
