Assignment

Step 1: Selection
Choose one fairy tale from the following list. You will then modernise and adapt to this fairy tale. For an example of a cleverly modernised fairy tale see the graphic novel Snow White by Matt Phelan (on reserve in the library). Although it is a graphic novel, it will give you some idea of how a traditional story has been adapted and set in a more modern context (in this case Phelan has taken Snow White and set it in 1920s New York).

Choose from these fairy tales (state your choice clearly):
1. The Elves and The Shoemaker
2. The Fisherman and His Wife
3. Puss in Boots
4. Jack and the Beanstalk

Step 2: Research
• Read at least two versions of this fairy tale (which you must reference)
• Research its origin and background (reference the sources you’ve used)
• Explain its essence (do not retell the story here, just the what it is about or what its theme is)
• Justify your choice (why did you choose this story) and explain your take on it for the modern version.

Title this section “Research” and include a reference list at the end. This section should be no more than 300 words long (max).

Step 3: Creative writing
Write your own, modernised version of this fairy tale, keeping only the basic essence of it the same. You can create a new plot twist, unexpected characters, a modern setting and interpret the theme in the context of today's world. You can also give it a new title. Do not reference in this section as it is your own creative work!

This is a creative task, so there is much room for your own interpretation, however, please observe the following restrictions:
• It must be based on one of the traditional stories from the list but must be modernised and take place today.
• It does not have to be suitable for children, although you may write with a children's audience in mind. Please be clear of your audience in the introduction.
• Plan your story carefully. You must show plot development, i.e. a beginning, rising action, climax and resolution. The pace is hugely important!
• While the assignment requires you to "fracture" a traditional story, you might like to keep certain common characteristics the same (for example, the lack of descriptive detail, the swift-moving plot). The assignment is testing not only your creative writing skills but your understanding of the genre as well!
