Highlights
Part 1: Crime prevention program
For Part 1, you must identify and describe a crime prevention initiative or program.
You may choose any program adopted (or proposed) by police forces in Australia, including, but not limited to:
• The Safer Suburbs Program that funds community safety measures.
• Early prevention programs designed to reduce crime amongst early adolescents, such as the Australian Government's National Youth Policing Model.
• Tougher penalties for Australians who travel overseas to sexually abuse children.
• The 'one punch' laws in New South Wales.
• High Tech Crime Operations Crime Prevention team dedicated to educating children on some of the risks encountered online (e.g. cyberbullying, online grooming).
Some preliminary resources for you to find current crime prevention programs include:
• The Australian Federal Police website
• The Attorney-General's Department website
• The Australian Crime Prevention Council website
• The Australian Institute of Crime website
• Newspaper articles, which are a good starting point, but you will need to follow up with the agencies involved in the program.
These programs and websites are suggestions only - please feel free to seek out additional resources and crime prevention initiatives.
Your description of the program should be approximately 250 words. Your description must be based on information that is publicly available (websites, reports, newspaper articles), rather than contacting the agencies themselves. If applicable, you may narrow your focus to one or two initiatives within a larger program; however, in this section you must also describe the broader program to which the initiatives belong.
Part 2: Rationale and empirical evaluation of program
For Part 2, you must discuss the theoretical rationale for the program and evaluate the effectiveness of this type of program.
Some questions to consider are:
• Which theoretical rationale underlies this intervention? Be sure to describe the theory (and, if relevant, the associated sub theory), explain how the theory can be applied to reduce crime, and describe the features of the program that relate to the theoretical rationale.
• Is there a theoretical rationale suggesting that this intervention would not work? If so, be sure to describe it and apply it to the program.
• Are there factors that might influence the effectiveness of this program?
• Beyond the statistics reported by the agencies themselves (if there are any), is there any empirical evidence published in peer-reviewed journals that supports this type of program work or that supports the theory underlying it? o That is, are the claims supported by the facts? o What evidence do you have that supports the importance of the theory you have chosen in the prevention of crime?
• How would you alter this program? Be sure to discuss the theoretical rationale underlying your modifications.
Throughout the assignment, you are welcome to critically analyze the empirical papers related to the theory underlying the program and/or the evaluation of similar programs.
You will need to use electronic databases (e.g. PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, JSTOR) to locate relevant academic articles. It is unlikely that you will find information on the theoretical rationale associated with the specific program; instead, you will have to rely on your knowledge (and the extensive literature) of criminological and policing theories to identify the relevant theoretical perspectives. Please keep in mind that you might have to think outside the box to look for this evidence. For example, if you are using social structure theory, you may need to search for evidence supporting the relevance of specific features of the theory (e.g. neighborhood disorganization) to criminal activity (and, conversely, crime prevention).
Your discussion may be informed by evaluations of similar types of programs used nationally or internationally. If you discuss a similar program, be sure to compare them to your program of interest (i.e. clearly identify the similarities and differences). However, you cannot rely exclusively on evaluations of other programs throughout this assignment. Instead, you must demonstrate that you can apply the relevant academic literature to critically analyze this specific crime prevention program and the factors that might influence its effectiveness.
