This unit uses a systems approach to assess, diagnose, plan, manage, document and evaluate care related to specialised health care needs of people. Students apply critical reasoning including assessment and interpretation skills and meet nursing competency standards in selected clinical
contexts.
The unit develops student’s skill in advanced management of critically unstable patients including primary and secondary assessment, recognising and responding to deteriorating patient’s adults and paediatrics; advanced assessment and care of patients in cardiac and respiratory crisis, advanced medication administration and management including applied pharmacology are all key areas of clinical learning in this unit.

1 Formulate, in collaboration with the health care team, a care plan appropriate to specialised health care
2 Recommend aspects of patient care to others according to competence and scope of practice
3 Evaluate interventions within the care plan in consultation with the health care team and determine further outcomes
4 Apply and evaluate skills, technology and knowledge in relation to the practice environment concerning critically unstable people
5 Evaluate relevant information in appropriate professional written and oral formats for a range of people and professionals

The patient is a 57 year old female, brought in by ambulance to the Emergency Department at 2345, who presented with a decreased Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 8/15, Febrile 38.5, and a 3 week history of general health decline.
