Task Description:
 
Building on earlier readings, and drawing from Modules 6-11, you are required to research, critically analyze and discuss the socio-cultural significance of a chosen popular music artist from the 1950s to early 21st century (i.e. now). Your written assignment will demonstrate your understanding of the course ideas by applying them to the chosen artist. This should work in two ways: you will use the course ideas to develop a critical understanding of your chosen artist, and you will use the story of your chosen artist to illustrate and explore the course ideas.
Marking criteria will be the substantive and formal requirements set out below.
Substantive requirements:

The Popular Music Artist,
Describe and contextualize the popular music artist, using non-academic and academic sources (about both the artist and their context e.g. this may include their era, scene, genre, medium, technology as applicable). 
Critically analyze and discuss the socio-cultural significance of the artist, using relevant vocabulary and ideas from this course. Cite sources as appropriate.
Tip: assume a reader who is reasonably intelligent and worldly, but not necessarily familiar with the events/artists/songs/scenes you are discussing (describe and explain them), and not necessarily familiar with the academic terms and ideas you are applying (describe and explain them - and remember that this is a key part of the task). 
Formal requirements
Academic writing: This task calls for a more traditional academic approach than the first assignment, and should therefore be written in the third-person (avoid "I" and "we"), using appropriately formal language, aiming for objectivity and especially critical analysis, and using course vocabulary with precision. Remember that words like 'authentic', 'live' and so on have specific meanings in our course (and they should raise questions that you will want to explore... e.g. why are certain forms of singing/performance/etc seen as authentic, by certain groups of people and not others? What does this tell us about the artist/fans/genre you are discussing, and about popular music or society in general?)
Citation: Cite sources for any factual claim (e.g. if you claim that something was popular/sold well/lost money; what the artist or organizer intended to achieve; etc). You may cite non-academic sources, e.g. newspapers or magazines can be useful for facts like how many people attended an event, interviews can give us access to the artist's own claims about an event; reviews can provide examples of critical analysis e.g. "this album received poor reviews in comparison to the band's prior work (Christgau 2016; Crawford 2016.
Cite scholarly sources (e.g. books and journal articles), including course readings, for the course ideas and vocabulary you are applying (again: don't forget that this is a key part of this task).
Referencing style: Your choice of style that is included in the Griffith referencing guide e.g. Harvard, APA, as long as you use it consistently and accurately.
Structure: There are no strict rules for the structure of your essay, but the structure should be deliberate and meaningful: think about the best order to say things so that both the small details and your overall analysis are clear and compelling to the reader. There is great power in the classic essay format: introduction, thematic body paragraphs, conclusion. Some things are classic for a reason!
