Assignment Task

Choose articles based on a topic of international relations that use the same method(s)

Ensure they are  academic peer-reviewed texts.

Guidance questions for critiquing the research article are below:

Is the methodology adopted clear?

Is any terminology explained for the reader?

Are the methods of data collection suited to the chosen methodology?

Are the aims of the research stated?

What steps have been taken to ensure ethics have been considered?

Are the research questions appropriately considered?

Is the researcher’s relationship to the context of the research articulated/apparent?

Is the analysis of collected data clear and are the findings appropriate?

Are there clear implications for new theory and new practice?

Does the researcher include any further avenues for future work in the conclusion?

Include references to other authors who write about aspects of the research conducted.

You may like to consider the research paper under the following questions which are based on Jurgen Habermas’s criteria of social validity (1976) and summarised by McNiff and Whitehead (2010) (slightly reworded)

• Is the claim/are the claims comprehensible - is the research written in language that others/you may follow?
• Is the claim/are the claims truthful - is there a sufficient evidence base for the writer to make the claims to knowledge that they make?
• Is the claim/are the claims authentic - is the researcher and research trustworthy – is there a values-base to the work and does the researcher live their values in their practice and writing?
• Is the claim/are the claims appropriate -is the research conducted with a full/ reasonable understanding of the political, economic, social and cultural backgrounds within which the research is being conducted and reported? This refers to the normative background in which the researcher is working, living and writing and can give the whole authenticity
