Brief

In this first research exercise, you are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of (critical) discourse analysis as a research method to analyse media texts. You will write up your analysis in a coherent.

1. Context: source of material (author, media outlet and its overall political position), context of studied material (to which global/ local debates is it related), date of publication, target audience, style & genre

2. Presentation of data: identify and classify units of analysis [who says what to whom], structural features (narrative beginning, middle, end), language or visual styles, link between headline & content or caption & image, any other relevant units of analysis [avoid linear paraphrase and focus on contrast, parallels, groups of words belonging to the same lexical field, elements of composition in the image etc.

3. Interpretation of data: in this section you focus on 'effects' and 'regimes of truth. What truths does the collected data establish or take for granted? How does it amplify or challenge existing beliefs or opinions? How does it speak to cultural codes or reader/viewer assumed moral position? How does it reflect a relation of power? How does it reinforce or challenge a dominant worldview?
