• Hand hygiene is a vital factor in reducing the spread of infections in aged care settings and is an essential practice to protect both staff members and residents from infectious diseases (Department of Health and Human Services Tasmanian Government, 2015). Some residents in aged care facilities have chronic bacterial and viral infections and can sometimes harbour them in urine, faeces, bodily fluids, and wounds, from where they may spread to others (Government of South Australia, 2021). In these instances it is vital that hand hygiene is conducted as per the 5 Moments of Hand Hygiene, in addition to standard personal protective equipment, to prevent person-to-person transmission of infection, because in an aged care setting, infections of this sort can easily lead to outbreaks (The Department of Health, 2010). In an aged care setting staff members also have to ensure that they follow excellent hand hygiene practices, because the elderly are very vulnerable towards getting ill, and even infections such as the common flu or gastroenteritis can lead to life threatening circumstances by transforming into pneumonia or severe dehydration respectively (Department of Health Australian Government, 2020).
