Description

This assessment uses a contemporary television series which follows high acuity and critical ill patient and family cases over time. The video medium allows for verbal and visual cues to be gathered related to the person, their family, their health condition, the work of the healthcare team, the clinical environment and the care interventions the person is receiving and their response to this treatment. This visual exposure to high acuity patient care examples and the associated series of questions will support students to contextualise and focus their learning from this unit and encourage students to explore their curiosity and learn more.

Instructions

2. Choose one (1) of the following patient cases to analyse in more depth
   • Rachael from episode 1, or
   • John from episode 8.
3. Develop responses to the following prompts/questions to investigate, analyse and describe the clinical care provided to the high acuity patient using evidence from the literature to inform your critical discussion. Word counts are suggestions only
   • Introduction & Conclusion words each
   • Provide a summary of the clinical case (patient story), defining any key terms and pathophysiological processes
   • Applying clinical reasoning, identify and concisely describe two (2) of the highest priorities of care (providing a rationale for these choices) during the acute phase of the patient’s illness 
   • Discuss two (2) high acuity technologies supporting the treatment of the patient that are monitored or managed by nurses, include rationales for these interventions in this case
   • Examine and recommend pharmacological interventions to support the care and comfort of the patient in this case during the acute phase of care (these may be observed in the video or recommended based on your research of the case study generally and the specific therapies the patient is receiving)
   • Focusing on health advocacy, reflect on the nurse’s role in the care of high acuity patients and their family/carers. What capabilities do nurses require to support families in this care environment? Identify personal strategies that will strengthen your capability to provide safe high acuity care. this section should be written in first person as a reflection
