 Learning Outcomes

  • Critically analyse the concept of security and origins of threats in the context of dependable systems,
  • Formulate different types of security requirements that may be required in a complex system,
  • Critically evaluate and apply security design and secure coding principles, technologies and tools,
  • Communicate design decisions for security problems.

This assessment will contribute to all the learning outcomes for this module.
Assessment Background/Scenario

eYor is working on implementing a new online order-processing system for auctions and shops. They aim to include payment handling. After a survey of potential customers, they have identified the following issues as key to their potential new offering:
Customers want to be able to choose to either use the full service (online catalogue, shopping basket and payment) or just partial (online catalogue & shopping basket with an external payment provider, or payment handling only). This means that eYor will provide two services which are cohesive but loosely coupled. No matter how transactions are being handled, they must either complete fully or terminate completely. Partial transaction handling (e.g. order accepted without payment or payment accepted without confirmation of order) must not occur.
The online system may need to be upgraded or extended using plug-in software from external providers.
Customer catalogue & shopping solutions which use the eYor payment handler must be able to confirm their identities before the payment handler proceeds.
Customers must be able to log in to the eYor system to maintain their own data, carry out financial transactions and update their online catalogues.
eYor staff must be able to access customer data, at any time, in order to investigate potential fraud, handle complaints and deal with any errors that arise.
Order data will be stored in a database which can be checked by the payment system and vice-versa.
Assessment Task/s
eYor management have asked you to prepare an outline design for the main security features of proposed system, addressing all of the requirements listed above. Because there may be cost implications associated with your proposal, they have also requested a report which justifies the decisions and recommendations you make. You may include any examples or proofs which support your justification.
Your design and report should be no more than 15pages in length, excluding elements which will not be marked (i.e. cover page, references and informative appendices). For guidance, typical answers usually run to about 4 pages in the specified format.
Deliverables
General submission criteria

The submission is a single document. It must be provided in a format which Canvas can display (i.e. PDF or MS-Word native format).
Marks are awarded for addressing the problems set, the quality of your discussion, and justification of your assumptions/choices/conclusions etc.
You are expected to research your answers and to cite appropriate academic and/or other sources in an appropriate format for the type of report you have been asked to write. It is probably not sufficient to use only the module notes.
Present your answers on A4 pages, with a minimum 12pt font (14 point for headings), minimum 120% line spacing (what Word calls “Multiple 1.08”), and minimum 2cm margins either side.
Paragraphs must not be excessively long. “Wall of text” answers, which do not contain breaks at logical points, are not acceptable.
Any references or other sources used must be listed at the end of the document.
The report must adhere to the maximum page length as stated in the task. Cover page and reference lists or bibliographies do not count towards these limits.
NOTE: Excess pages will not be marked/graded. Failure to comply with the specified format will result in a mark of 0.
Marking Criteria

  • The marks for each section are detailed below. The maximum mark is 100.
