Overview of learning and teaching activities on the module:
The module will use blended learning to deliver the sessions that integrate face-to-face teaching with the guided learning on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). In addition to this, students will be expected to complete independent learning to widen their knowledge and understanding and complete their assessment. The face-to-face taught sessions will be delivered through a range of methods, including interactive lectures involving PowerPoint presentations and practical workshops, seminar discussions, group work, tutorials and independent learning and research. The lectures will make the use of audio-visual material to provide students with vivid sound and visual images and personal stories related to the global health issues. Lectures will introduce students to the basic concepts and key theories underpinning the principles on the subject areas. Prior to each session, students will be expected to complete the session specific guided learning on the VLE. As part of independent learning, students will be required to invest time exploring VLE which will provide information on reading, research activities, article reviews, seminar preparation, review of lecture notes and directed study tasks. Students will also be required to demonstrate their engagement through discussion boards on the VLE. Where appropriate and necessary, VLE Collaborate will be used to power learner engagement in addition or as a substitution to face-to-face learning.
Lectures will introduce students to the basic concepts and key theories underpinning the principles of epidemiology. Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills for epidemiological analyses within computer-based practical workshops, seminar discussions, group work, tutorials and independent learning and research. Students will be directed to sources of epidemiological data relating to issues concerning global public health/health promotion. Students will be encouraged to keep up to date with recent and current global research issues both in journals and the media, within the field of global epidemiology.
