Critically Evaluating and Responding to a Source

We all tend towards confirmation bias; that is, a tendency to search for, remember, and interpret information that already confirms our values or beliefs. Our job as researchers is to actively, diligently, and objectively assess information presented to us and our reactions to it.

Read Radley Balko’s “What you Eat is Your Business” and Brooke Gladstone’s “The Influencing Machines” and answer the following short answer questions in full sentences. Remember to cite and paraphrase where appropriate. As always, clarity and grammatical accuracy matter!

1)    Brooke Gladstone is very much in conversation with a number of thinkers across time on the subject of technology, some in support of her argument and some against it. Give an example of a naysayer Gladstone uses, and explain how it contributes to her argument.

2)    Radley Balko claims that the onus for being obese is always on the individual alone, but is it really this simple? We talk a lot about audience and purpose in this course: Balko writes this piece for all Americans, but does his argument consider the situations and circumstances of every American? Find a claim Balko makes and refute it.

3)    Does one author make more responsible use of naysayers (explaining other perspectives fairly and fully)? Explain your answer.

4)    Use your textbook and even Google to research Brooke Gladstone and Radley Balko. Do both authors meet criteria for ethos? (Are they reliable and trustable in their expertise on media and obesity/policy respectively? Are their publications (if any) peer-reviewed or from objective publishers and websites?

5)    Why do you think Gladstone chose to present her argument on media, from handheld tools to language to advanced technology, using a comic? Does it make her argument more persuasive and accessible, or less? Why?

6)    Write a thesis statement that you could use for an essay that agrees or disagrees with ONE of these two articles, and which uses a naysayer gesture and TSIS templates for agreeing or disagreeing. You can use the examples I posted on Michael Hanlon’s article as a template if you get stuck.
