The analysis task is about understanding the situation or problem, first by building a SMART goal in Blog 2 (which will be the title of assessment 2 and 3) and second by consultation and analysis.

In assessment 2 the aim is to develop your skills in situational analysis ready for strategic planning of solutions in Assessment 3.  You will learn how to use analysis tools in the relevant modules and in Collaborate Sessions. The use of each tool, SWOT, GAP and Force Field analysis, is required as a component of assessment 2. The templates of each of the tools will be sent to you via email. 1. Using the situation for analysis approved in Blog 2 and SMART goal after feedback in Blog 2. Consider how you will explore/analyse the aspects and questions inherent in your situation. Next step is to utilise the three tools SWOT, GAP and Force Field analyses to analyse the situation.  The following areas must be covered in your presentation.

   • First slide will be the title which is your SMART goal/s; some may have sub goals for sequential outcomes toward the final goal. Remember a SMART goal is a single sentence that contains each element of the SMART acronym see module. 

   • Next slides describe your situation, what are the issues, who are stakeholders, how have you undertaken consultation, what do your stakeholders think/want and what is the desired outcome

   • Consider who you will consult with including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services/liaison officers in relation to your situation.  However, in general, consider what are the important aspects of cultural competence required in your leadership and management context. You may refer to ministry of health targets or organisational or service targets to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. If you consider that your selection situation for analysis doesn’t have an impact for the specific needs of Aboriginal and Torres Islander people (which is rare) consult your Course Coordinator

   • Complete each template - SWOT, GAP and Force Field analysis - one per slide. Populate the template with the variables relevant to your situation. The templates provided must be used for this assessment. 

   • What are the combined findings of the analysis - summary of the analysis. Dot points are fine. What have learned and what is important as a result of the analysis.

   • The final aspect of your presentation considers ‘in draft’ your strategic plans with at least three options, goals, directions, you will flesh out with more detail and evidence as you evolve and write up the analysis into a report for Assessment 3.

Leadership style 

From the readings, I have identified Authentic leadership as a good leadership style at my current workplace.  Working in a small nursing teams of usually three nurses I found that knowing your staff’s strengths and  weakness and well as my own can play a huge part in delivering appropriate person-centred care to individual  patients. Using authentic leadership style will include skills and traits I have like being self-aware, being genuine  and truthful, knowing your staff and how they can cope with certain emotional situations. (Luthans & Avolio,  2003). 

Situation analysis  

Working in an acute adolescent ward has shown me there is always room for improvement in care we  implement. Our goal is to use “least restrictive care” model. This meaning letting the consumers voice their  need and wants and not controlling/forcing the consumers to follow every instruction given. Being teenagers  there will always be a consumer who will not always follow what is being asked of them, and naturally when  staff ask to comply will result in a dispute and ultimately diminished report between certain staff and  consumers. Understanding which staff can work with certain types of consumers can increase productivity and  lessen issues and conflicts in the ward, as well as build trust within the leader. Another example is utilising male  and female staff. Pairing male consumers with male staff I have often seen very good results as boys tend to feel  more comfortable talking to male nurses about issues they have and same goes for female consumers and staff.  Especially working in mental health where often female consumers have traumas related to male interactions  and are not completely comfortable talking to males as they would rather seek female nurses help.  

SMART Goal 

A goal for me is to help staff members and leaders to understand the importance of pairing same sex nurses and  consumers in an adolescent unit, as well as increasing productivity by 10% by utilising staff strengths.
