Introduction to Project 1
Our bodies are sites onto which meaning is inscribed. Meaning and understanding related to our bodies are both based on what occurs in nature as well as how our social word is ordered. The order and disorder of the world around us directly relates to power and different dynamics between the social and cultural groups we are born and socialised into, as well as identify with. This assignment will be divided into two sections so that you may adequately address different aspects of how our bodies are understood, experienced and categorised.

Part 1 will be forwarding a topic of debate to be done in groups and Part 2 will be a written component to be done individually.  
Part One: Gender Debates (Group Work) –
You are to get into groups of no less than three people and no more than five people and select one of the three following perspectives:
1. Gender is innate.
2. Gender is a social construct.
3. Gender is a socially constructed and innate quality.

Part Two: Written Component (Individual Work) –

Write a structured essay in which you critically unpack language, discourse, power and race and distinguish between discourses on racial supremacy. Like in the previous component, you must refer to socially constructed ideas but with a key focus on race (the Western ideals in relation to the Other). You must outline how race has been historically framed and constructed as a hierarchy based on skin colour, geography and opposing group identities. Include your perspective on how these play out in a South African context today. Ensure you support these views academically and provide examples.
