Assignment Task: In this project, you are asked to implement the ray-casting algorithm, a simplified version of ray tracing. That is, you do NOT have to consider recursive ray tracing in this project, but should include the following considerations:
  • You should have at least two spheres sitting (or floating) on a square-like floor. Both spheres must have diffuse reflectance and additionally one must have specular reflectance. Shadows should be considered on both spheres as well as the floor, although the floor does not have to be reflective except the ambient color. A sample picture is shown below.

  • At least two lighting sources must be included in your scene. You may assume point lighting sources.
  • The output should be a color image. While you may use any image format, the simplest one is the PPM format. A sample code including the image parser of PPM format will be provided on D2L.
Grading policy:
  • 50% for the basic ray casting (including intersection)
  • 30% for adding lighting effects (ambient, diffuse, specular)
  • 20% for shadow testing
