As a young Mechanical Engineering graduate, you realise that getting a job is not easy. You decide to start a small company. You need to write a business plan and apply for funding. 3 executive summary (this will be done last)
This section highlights the key aspects of our business plan. It explains the purpose of starting this new business and why this business is likely to be a success. It brings attention to the strengths and competitive advantage of the business. This is an analysis of feasibility of business in relation to its target market. The executive summary will explain the kind of business plan that is being presented: an application for a loan from the bank. This includes how much is being applied for, how the money will be used and over what period the loan will be repaid.
4 Business/profile service summary (service industry company offerings, and vision)
- This section is important as the investors need to know whether the service is useful and marketable.
A detailed description of the industry and business or service the company will help focus and define your objectives using information analysis. It should be explained whether the business is new or established.
What is the name of your company and what is the significance? Explain the reason for the location chosen and the choice of service provided.
A detailed description of the product or service provided is necessary. What makes it different from other businesses providing the same or similar services to the customer - is it safer, faster, cleaner, cheaper, more convenient, and etc.? What are its unique features?
What are the business’ long or short term goals and how they will be carried out - be specific in realistic? Are there any regulatory or legislative rules that apply to the service?
5 Marketing/action plan (research analysis and strategy)
Is there an interest in your service or product? Examine the supply and demand for this service.
Describe the target market and why the service will sell to that particular market. (Who will most likely be using it and why?). Use research you have done on the market as evidence in this section. What is the size, income demographics, trends and sales of the potential market and how does this support your decision to provide this service?
What are you focusing on as a marketing strategy - and image, quality or reputation, location (easy access), convenience? Is it affordable? If not what are customers paying for? What is competitive advantage? How close are the existence of substitutes and how ready are customers to switch to a new service provider?
How will you successfully reach potential customers – advertising? Failure to answer this question effectively is a common flaw in business plans. Investors will not be convinced until they can clearly understand how the customers will be reached and attracted. This section illustrates the knowledge of potential users of service being provided.
What are the strengths and opportunities of the company?
6 Operation and production (management)
This section focuses on the workforce. How does the business function on a day to day basis? Investors would need to know who is involved in running of the business. What are the key jobs, roles and responsibilities within the business?
Assess the premises requirements for effective service delivery
7 Potential Risks and Assumptions
Are there any potential risks or threats to the company? These issues that will need to be addressed as they may hinder the success of the business. The purpose of a business plan is to uncover the weaknesses in the planning process. While compiling the business plan has any problems been discovered along the way?
This is where all risks are addressed and solved. It is important for investors to see how problems are dealt addressed.
8 Financial plan (cost)
Examine and explain the financial needs of the business and how much it will cost to provide the service. This section will include all financial quotes e.g rental, equipment, furniture, marketing, etc. Compare prices. What is their initial need to start the business? How many people are you catering for at a given time? It is imperative to keep track of cost of every possible item necessary for the success of the business, being it tangible or intangible, direct or indirect.
This section provides a forecast of the revenue and expenses based on accurate calculations? What will indicate whether financial goals are not being met? How much will the business earn based on the strategy? How much will it take to run the business, perform successfully and generate the desired revenue to ensure return on investment? Therefore, attention should be given to timelines - how long does the business have to pay the money back
Cash inflow and outflow are important to include discovering the cash generating ability. This allows for an analysis of the financial risks of the business.
The financial figures need to be accurate, honest and clear. Make sure that they comply with the average costs used within the industry to support your financial needs. Make sure that money is not being spent unnecessarily.
9 Appendices
This will include supporting documentation that is too large to be included in the business plan but that are important to the reader, such as legal documents, quotations, etc.
