The scenario
You are required to design a relational database to implement the following scenario:
A local boatyard hires out cruising yachts on the river Forth. The season is 20 weeks long. Each week is identified by number: Week 1, Week 2, etc. There are several yachts: each has a unique name (for example, Isobel). The lengths of the yachts are recorded in metres. Groups of people make bookings of a boat for a week. The price of the hire depends on the size of the boat and the week. Each group has a “skipper” and the remainder of the group is the “crew”. There are at least two people in each group. Some people may be in several groups (in different weeks) and the skipper for a booking in one week may be a crew member in another week. The boatyard firm keeps contact information on all the people in the group, including the skipper, including at least their name, age, and their e-mail address. When booking, the group may request one or more standard “extras” from a predefined list. Each extra is identified by a unique string, e.g. “blankets”, “snacks” etc, and has its own price. The one or more of each extra may be ordered.
Design the database using ER modelling and normalisation Design a relational database for this scenario by following these steps (percentage of marks for each step for this part of the assignment are shown in brackets):
1. Entities and attributes (20%): from the given scenario, extract out a set of entities and their attributes, justifying your choices.
2. Single table relation (15%): specify a single table design for your database that is in first normal form (1NF). Explain potential issues with this design, if was actually to be used.
3. ER model (30%): develop a multi-relation design based only on the entities identified in step 1, using ER modelling. Document this using an ER diagram: any standard notation is acceptable and it can be hand-drawn. On this diagram, include short names for the relationships and specify their cardinality and optionality. Also include the attributes of each relation, but you DO NOT need to identify primary or foreign keys (you will do this in step 4). Provide an explanation for your choices of relations (tables) in this design and any assumptions you have made. Note that at this stage your design can include many-to-many relationships, if that is appropriate. Step 4 will allow you to change your design so that it is readily implementable as a relational database.
4. 3NF model (30%): now redesign your database so that it is in third normal form (3NF) and draw the corresponding ER diagram. The diagram should include the attributes of each relation, suitably highlighting the primary and foreign keys. Explain and justify the steps you have taken to achieve 3NF. Also, with the aid of explicit examples from this boat hire scenario, discuss in detail why 3NF is desirable for the maintenance and use of your database.
A further 5% of marks will be for the overall quality of your report, including its structure and layout.
Late submission
It is possible for the co-ordinator to vary the dates for a student. If you must submit your work late (perhaps for medical reasons) then this can be arranged, but it must be discussed with the co-ordinator as soon as possible after the problem becomes known. Coursework that is submitted late will be accepted up to seven days after the published deadline (or expiry of any agreed extension) but the mark will be lowered by three marks per day or part thereof. After seven days the piece of work will be deemed a non-submission and you will receive a mark of 0 for the coursework and a Fail grade for the whole module.
