Highlights
Module Introduction
This module gives students the opportunity to undertake an individual supervised project. Possible types of projects include but are not limited to research by proof of concept (design-oriented projects) and empirical research projects. For a proof of concept project, students will be required to develop a problem statement, collect and analyse data to arrive at a design specification for a system that addresses the formulated problem. They also have to plan the development, decide on alternative solutions and produce software complete with testing, verification and validation. For an empirically based research project students will be required to develop a research question, produce a research plan, collect and analyse data to arrive at an explanation addressing the original research question.
Module Overview
Aims:
The project module aims to develop the students’ knowledge and skills required for planning and executing research projects such as proof of concept projects or empirical studies related to computer science. To plan and carry out their projects the students will have to:-
• Apply theories, methods and techniques previously learned
• Critically analyse and evaluate research results drawing on knowledge from other modules
• Develop their communication skills to enable them to communicate their findings competently in written and oral form
Learning outcomes:
On completion of this module, successful students will be able to demonstrate: Knowledge
1. A thorough understanding of the academic field(s) relevant to the project topic including a critical awareness of current problems and new insights
2. A comprehensive and critical understanding of the relevant research and evaluation methods and techniques
Skills
3. The ability to explore a topic critically and in depth by means of literature review or state-of-the-art review and develop a problem statement or research hypothesis
4. The ability to compose a research design and produce meaningful research results also in the absence of complete data
5. Work in an independent, self-directed manner, with critical self-evaluation of the project process, its management and its outcomes
6. Communication of their work and particularly their conclusions in written and oral form to a specialist and non-specialist (academic) audience
Learning and teaching strategy:
Students learn by applying theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The supervisor guides the student in this process.
Individual seminars/labs within module CST4040 will support the above mentioned project activities and will in particular facilitate the development of the initial project proposal and the writing of the dissertation.
Students will be assessed by dissertation and viva voce. While the dissertation will assess all of the above learning objectives to a certain degree, the viva will focus on a student’s ability to justify their decisions, to critically reflect on their work and to create new or additional solutions. Furthermore, the viva will ascertain the depth of their knowledge in the subject areas related to the project and the authorship of the project.
