CUC100 Assessment 3: Oral & Visual Presentation

Download Solution Order New Solution

Task Overview:

This assessment represents an important stage in writing an essay which is to draw up a clear plan of how you will organise and reference your ideas in your final essay. This plan will then guide your writing for your essay, keeping the overall structure clear and the paragraphs on topic.

It provides an opportunity to get feedback on your essay plan and review and refine your ideas before you start writing. You will also build and practice the important academic skills of presenting information verbally and visually.

Task Details:

Create and present a PowerPoint presentation of your essay plan for your final essay.

The presentation will show the ideas you plan to write about in your final essay, as well as the references you plan to include and your essay’s organisation.

Your 10 slides must use the following structure:

  • Slide 1: Provide your name and a title (clearly indicating your chosen scenario and scope).
  • Slide 2: Provide a draft thesis statement (key argument responding to the assessment task) for your essay in one or two sentences.
  • Slide 3: Provide background for your chosen scenario, including the stakeholders. Include supporting evidence.
  • Slide 4: Provide a definition of sustainability (with citation) and one or two sentences explaining how it reflects the concerns and responses in your chosen scenario.
  • Slide 5: Include a graphic (visual) representation of your essay plan for your chosen scenario. This can be a taxonomy or a visual outline, providing it is clear and accurate (a template is provided in Learnline). Add citations to reflect evidence used across the presentation.
  • Slides 6, 7 & 8: Explain the key sustainability concerns and responses you plan to write about in your final essay for each dimension (social, environmental and economic). Allow one slide per dimension. These concerns and responses should be the same as those

included in your essay plan/taxonomy on slide 5. Include supporting evidence for the concerns and responses discussed.

  • Slide 9: In the formal bibliographic (referencing) style of the current APA guide, list the most relevant publications that you have engaged with so far.
  • Slide 10: Conclude your presentation by reflecting on your progress towards the final essay. This slide should indicate an action plan and any further research that you still need to do to complete your final essay.

NB: This is not a final plan so we do not expect you to have covered everything you will discuss in your essay, but we do expect that at this stage you will have decided on most of the key ideas (topics and sub-topics) that your essay will cover and have engaged with the research process.

Suggestions to help you complete these tasks:

  • Read the task description carefully, so you include all required information;
  • Select a design template to ensure that your slides appear consistent in look and feel;
  • Select appropriate images that portray your slide’s message and purpose. For images that you use, reference each with its own web address directly under the image; references for images should not be added to slide 9 (which is a ‘bibliography’) that shows the references for the publications you use. However, when speaking to slide 9, consider explaining how and why some of your listed publications relate to the three dimensions and/or your thesis statement;
  • Add citations to your slides to support the ideas discussed;
  • Practice your speech before recording your voice and carefully check that your recording is audible;
  • Speaking/presenting to an audience:

o Be engaging vary your tone and add suitable emphasis to certain words

o Make slides readable and attractive from distance – minimum 24-point font;

o Keep slides uncluttered – use bullet points rather than full sentences;

o Do not read slides – use the slides to support what you are saying;

o Use an academic tone – not colloquial language.
