Cultural Safety in Health Care for Indigenous Australians

Assignment Task 

Introduction

This assessment item focuses on effectively communicating the relevance and importance of contemporary safety and quality improvement research, to the day-to-day practices of health and social care workers. A particular focus here is on applying safety and quality improvement concepts taught in this subject, to improving the cultural safety for Indigenous Australians, as professional colleagues and consumers of health and social care services.

The Task

• You are a staff member at Greenview Hospital (you can choose another health or social care service, e.g. residential aged care home, community health centre, primary care clinic).

• You are completing this subject as part of your studies at UTS. Your manager has asked you to share some of what you’ve been learning with your professional colleagues, by delivering a short educational seminar.

• They are interested in the topic of safety culture, and want to know if it is the same thing as cultural safety or something completely different. Your manager wants you to explain what these terms mean, and how they impact on the safety and quality of the care the service provides.
