Current and Future Challenges to Digital Forensics: An individual assignment in the form of an academic literature review style paper.
Students are to select one of the following topics and write an individual literature review type paper:
Machine Learning and Big Data: What issues is the digital forensic discipline facing due to the ever-growing capacities of storage media, and the requirement to acquire and analyse large volumes of data? How could machine learning be leveraged to assist practitioners to analyse evidence? Are there any potential disadvantages in employing these techniques?
Smartphone Forensics: Smartphones have become an ubiquitous device used throughout the day to undertake a variety of activities which may have been traditionally completed using a PC. What are the implications in the rise of smartphones for forensic practitioners?
Internet of Things (IoT): The proliferation of IoT devices within homes and businesses is likely to grow in the coming years. The data stored has the potential to provide forensic practitioners with new and interesting sources of evidence for presentation. Based on reviewing current IoT devices and services, what types of evidential artefacts will forensic practitioners be able to obtain, for both traditional and cybercrime investigations, and what evidence sources (e.g. devices, networks, servers) could they use to collect these artefacts?
This is an academic paper (more like an essay), not a business report. Do not make use of dot points or lists in the paper. Instead discuss and explain the concepts, with supporting evidence from the literature, culminating with your key findings, as part of the discussion and not as an appendix.
Your paper will be constructed and submitted individually, and should be 2,000 words (+10%) in length. The 2,000 words is inclusive of all sections except for the abstract, the reference list and any appendices. Please note that appendices may be referred to by the marker, where necessary, however they should not include materials that form a key part of the assessment and should be used sparingly. You will need to concentrate on delivering a mature academic writing style. You can assume the reader has a reasonable level of expertise, but any readings must still be cited. Hence, avoid using lengthy direct quotes to replace your words. Instead use citations to support your words/ideas.
All papers require the following clearly marked sections: abstract, introduction, discussion, conclusion and reference list. You do not need to start each section on a new page.
A minimum of six references from scholarly books, academic journals or conference proceedings is required for this assessment, however substantially more references are recommended. These references should come from scholarly books, academic journals or conference proceedings only. Supplementary references may be made to reputable sources (e.g. government reports, major vendors' documentation), however these should be used sparingly, with the vast majority of references being to academic sources.
The University provides extensive guidance on academic writing and referencing which can be accessed. Please note there is a specific section within Study Help on literature review writing. Please ensure that you are familiar with the resources provided, particularly regarding referencing. This assessment will provide you with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate your literature review and academic writing skills.
All content in your submission must be either original or appropriately paraphrased and synthesised, preferably from multiple sources. Please note that presenting synonymised (or similarly appropriated) content from other sources is not an appropriate approach for any element of this assessment and will not attract any marks.
Any content (or ideas) in the report which is not the student’s own original analysis must be clearly and correctly referenced, both in-text and in the reference list. Failure to include both an in-text citation and a reference list entry for this content will result in no marks being awarded for the relevant content and may result in an academic integrity investigation.
This is an individual assessment, students should not collaborate with any other person on any element of this assessment. If the Study Help site does not sufficiently address a question relating to academic writing/referencing, further assistance can be sought from the UniSA Learning.
For other requirements, please see the Further Assessment Information section.
