You have been hired as an assistant buyer of denim, for a retailer with brick and mortar stores and online business here in the GTA and across Canada. This is an individual comparison shop project. You may choose from any of the below retailers or suggest another that carries a good selection of denim if you have someone not on the list.

Part 1 – Retailer/Customer Profile Worksheet to include the following:
Retailer
Target Age/ Cohort
Education Level
Income range (high resources – low resources) 
Psychological Level (motivated by ideals, achievement, self-expression etc)
Fashion Cycle (innovator, early adopter, early majority, laggard) specify,
Competitive Stores – where else does this customer shop, based upon your observations, in class discussions of customer profile.

Your research is observational, gathered from 1 or several store visits. Don’t RUSH, take time to really look at the details regular consumers likely miss. Ideally you would want to try on garments to assess fit and discuss this along with visual merchandising observations in your presentation, but that may not be possible this winter.
You are offering a professional opinion on this denim retailer. Look at their product lines and anything you feel is relevant: store design, maybe they have a mission or values statement, anything interesting and compelling on their web site and especially their product offering.
Questions to ask yourself: Are they clearly creating product that targets their customer?
Does their retail environment and social media reflect their customer profile?

Part 2 – Product
You will create 6 slides 1 each of the 6 most important styles of denim, currently carried in this retailer. Start with 3most basic (label slides Basic) followed by the 3 most fashionable (label slides Fashion).
Basic styles will be bought and merchandised in volume (if you can get to a store). Prices are generally lower than fashion. Styling is simpler.
Fashion styles, although bought in less depth could be potential volume buys (perhaps with some alterations) for next season. Think about this when you select them. They are always more expensive than basics, and merchandised face forward to show the fashion details. If only some of their styles are shown on models, it is often the fashion. You can use examples of any style: top, jacket, short, or jean etc. (as long as the fabric is denim).

Part 3 – Customer Profile Visual Board (Pinterest or other program) 1 slide
You will compile a collage of images that clearly illustrate who your target customer is for this denim retailer, by showing examples of his/her life style, and influences, family life, work, personal style, fashion images, hobbies and recreational interests. 1 photo per example ie: rooms in their living space, car or public transit, food, travel, coffee, leisure time, technology, friends, family, pets, work, max 3 photos of denim on this board. It is not a denim board – it is a customer profile board. Because you have an excellent eye for quality artistic images now, I will expect only the best from you here. Minimum 15 images Your board (online this is several slides) must be neat and well organized, professional. All images must be cohesive. You must be able demonstrate a clear understanding of who the target customer is for the retailer you have chosen. Do not use photos from their site!
