Surveying Principles
Anywhere on a parcel of land it is possible to select two points (say A and B) and measure the bearing and horizontal distance from A to B to establish a basic control line.
Other points can be located relative to this control or datum line by making at least two other measurements.
This is the basis of a planimetric map, that is a map which only shows the horizontal location of features on a paper or 2D display.
If the relative elevation of points are also measured with respect to a vertical bench mark (say point A), then we have the data needed for the production of a topographic map. Topographical maps represent the location of points belonging to a 3D space.
