Introduction
You are required to design a residential stiffened raft slab for a site located in the township of Horsham, which is located in north western Victoria. The stiffened raft slab design must be in accordance with AS2870:2011.
This assignment can be completed individually, or in a group of two students. I would prefer you to complete this assignment as a group of two as it will promote discussion of the critical design elements. This will naturally lead to a better design and understanding of the Australian Standard. Therefore, if you are working in a group, I recommend that you do not simply split the work and work independently.
You first must select an existing house floor plan from a reputable home builder such as Metricon Homes, Porter Davis Homes, Henley Homes, Carlisle Homes, Boutique Homes, Granvue Homes, and so on. All of these home builders have websites with multiple floor plans available for you either copy or download. However, your selected house floor plan must actually fit into the building envelope on the site and it should ideally be complex enough for you to be able to demonstrate a full understanding of AS2870.
Due to local council regulations, the new dwelling must be sited on the block with a minimum setback of 4 m from the front boundary and 2 m from each side and rear boundary. The only exception to this is that the garage can be built right up to one of the side boundaries. This particular block of land also has a 3 m easement running along the entire rear north-east boundary that cannot be built on. The site plan is provided as Fig. 1.
Points to Consider:
1. The floor plan that you download will most likely not be drawn to a convenient scale. In this case, I suggest you download it and scale it on your page to 1 in 100 (probably using an A3 sized template). If the floor plan is not accurately dimensioned, then I suggest you scale it from one of the internal room dimensions. If the plan has no dimensions, then you can assume the double garage is a standard 6 m x 6 m and scale it from this.
2. If the type of construction is unknown, then the external walls can be considered to be reinforced single leaf masonry with an internal timber frame. However, if the floor plan clearly shows internal masonry walls then you must address this when determining the equivalent construction. Furthermore, the roof can be considered to be a timber truss structure where all loads are transferred to the external walls.
