Water demand has been increasing all over the world due to the scarcity of potable water as well as a huge increase of population. The increasing demand for development has a great impact on all types of infrastructures. ABS (2006) informed that world has been under increasing pressure to keep up with the new water demands for potable water due to the increasing population and the devastating effects of climate change. There has a significant impact of water demand all over the world due to the rapid growth of population as well as changes in human lifestyle due to the quick economic growth (Whittington et al., 2002). Umapathi et al. (2012) stated that the increasing shortage of fresh water accredited to numerous factors that has prompted authorities to widen the variety of sustainable water management approaches to fulfil the water demand. Umapathi et al. (2012) also informed that traditional mains water supply from the water grid has led to the usage of several substitute water sources, for example, rainwater tanks to supplement conventional water supply sources and release strain on customary centralised water supply methods. Rainwater is a feasible option to consider for new water demands. The quality of rainwater is comparatively good and the users like the rainwater for its softness. But the rainwater is free from some essential mineral salts including fluoride, calcium and magnesium, which may cause nutrient deficiencies to people drinking rainwater (Ahmed and Rahman, 2000). Ahmed and Rahman (2000) stated that advantages of rainwater collection system include the quality of rainwater is relatively good, the system is self-governing and hence appropriate for dispersed settlements, no energy costs are experienced in operating the system and simplicity in maintenance by the possessor.
